I saw a post once where the guy attached his regs to the underside of the lid, I think using drywall anchors, but now I can't seem to find it.

Any thoughts?
 
I used a piece of polyethylene cutting board and used 3M trim tape (auto parts store) to stick that to the lid, it is very strong. Then just screwed the regulators to the cutting board, no problems. No reason you couldn't use a piece of wood either...
 
I bonded hard maple rails to the lid cut so the liner just touches the tops.
I used one to mount the manifold and intend to use the other for a secondary bank...
