Personally I think greedy capitalism has ruined a tribute to all who serve in our Military.

It should be a time to honor our Military an Veterans not to go to a big box store to save 10% on something you probably don't need anyway.

I totally agree - and have similar disagreement with the commercialization of pretty much every notable date on the calendar.

But you can't blame the retailers when consumers are always up for spending 24/7. It's why Amazon is so successful...

<sigh>

Cheers!

As a retail worker, no shopping for me. I was off Friday, worked 3pm-midnight last night, am off today (and working on refinishing my smoker) and will work probably 7a-5p tomorrow. I figure if I can't be off to spend the day with my friends and family remembering and celebrating those who deserve to be remembered on this day, ill make 150% of my regular pay to be at work.

Then I'll come home, have a few beers, grill something, and celebrate later in the day.

I think capitalism has ruined everything. I think the people who fight for our country are only in it for the money as well. WHen I think of veterens, I think of wwII.

You really think that today's military personnel are only in it for the money???

I wasn't under the impression that it is a high paying option. Some benefits, yes, like money for college. But paid to possibly put your life on the line. I don't think the money covers that.

Well...grathan has never served in the military. He doesnt know what its like to write that blank check. As a veteran, I should be offended. But ive learned to not let it bother me. If I find a good deal on Memorial Day....or Veterans Day for that matter...I take it. But I dont go out there like its Black Friday.

Cheers

I can completely disagree with that. my did didn't go to Viet Nam for the money. none of my friends didn't go to the middle east for the money. in fact none of my friends, brothers, or family joined any branch of the military for the money. when I tried to join the Marine Corps, it wasn't for the money. you forgetting about the Korean War vets? WW1 vets? Viet Nam vets? Desert Storm vets? our current desert war vets? any other vets served, whether in war or peace? I'm pretty sure you just struck a nerve, son.

As a recent veteran (US Army and US Army Reserves), I can honestly believe that most military people do it for:

1) the money
2) they do not want to go to college (yet)
3) they find regular life boring
4) They can not function in a normal society

and

100) To serve their country

I am referring to ONLY recent military members and am not INCLUDING every military member. This is just my opinion based on what I have seen the past 6 years.

As far as answering the original post, most "sales" are BS. The stores mark up the products original price and then offer bigger "discounts" to make it seem like you are getting a good deal. Really you are just paying for the product at its normal price.

I must be related to & know a bunch of 100's.

I don't think money is the sole factor for enlisting, however it is often a deciding one for many young men. A well paying job right out of high school is very hard to pass up if you come from a poor family. Signing bonus and college paid for as well. Not to mention housing allowances. These things being dangled in front of an 18 year old are the enticements that keep us from being a draft military. The ONLY reason? Not a chance. A very large part of the reason? Definitely.

I don't think that is such a bad thing either. I gladly pay for all these things so that our men and women in service can successfully do their job. Sometimes I dislike what their bosses want them to do, but I never ever feel like the services the troops render is one that should be marginalized. Thanks to all of you who have served and do serve. Enjoy your just rewards because you have earned them.

Billy-Klubb- you might. Like I said this is just my opinion from those I know.

Let me clarify.

People often just assume that everyone joins to "serve his/her country". Often times, this is "a" primary factor that someone joins the military but rarely "the" primary factor.

For instance, my best friends joined the military to start a new life after a divorce, to leave boring job, to support new families, etc. They liked the benefits (and military members do make a lot of money after you factor in the pay check, healthcare, housing, etc.-even the low rankings ones).

So Im not saying that everyone does joins just for the money. Its a number of factors. Obviously some do join with the primary reason being to serve his/her country. I just dont think it is a large majority. I would say it is a very small majority (like 20%). And there is nothing wrong with this.

I don't "might". I know my brothers, friends, and family. I acknowledge the number that don't. but there is still quite a large number that do. don't underestimate that number that do.

I think capitalism has ruined everything. I think the people who fight for our country are only in it for the money as well.

The reason you are able to say this is due to the service & sacrifice of all who serve in the United States military. Today is Memorial Day, a day to remember all those who fought for your freedom & died in service to this great nation.
Regards, GF.

The real wars are fought in capiltalist boardrooms today. Don't chop off half my statement and pretend like I don't honor the veterans of the past.

Once the nuclear bomb came into play, the whole purpose of military seems rather pointless.

Tell that to the Veterans and the families of the fallen from the Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq among other conflicts. Without them Saddam Hussein could be controlling most of the Mid East, Al Qaeda would be running more rampant than they are.

Pointless?? Since 1945???

Look at Canada. Do they have messed up people walking around deranged from war experiences? Do they not have all of the freedoms we have?

Would we not all band together if the circumstances called for it??? Would we have gone to Vietnam or Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan if we all got to decide? It is easy to look back and say I would not have, but who knows.

does it hurt having your head that far up your butt? I'll bet you can see the back of your teeth from you your point of view.

Sparking a conversation that requires critical thinking and analysis based on personal expereince and/ knowledge = trolling (being obnoxious a**hole). I don't think so.

Anyway, if you think most of the people you know joined ONLY to serve their their county, ask them how much their sign on bonus was. I bet the got a big one (which is why many join). Consider any outside factors (like the ones I mentioned) may have served as a primary factor of a individual serving instead of joining just to serve their country. Like I mentioned some do join only to serve their country, not most. All should be regarded as great Americans for serving.

Derogatory comments are unneeded and are pointless. Everyone should have the right to express his/her view. We should all be capable of, and willing to, listening to these views in a objective manner without responding in a offensive manner.

Formulate a intellectual response and respond accordingly. That's how America will move forward.

I cannot believe that the suggestion to allow all Americans to voice their opinion on a matter of war was met with such cynicism.

Luckily, Americans did voice their opinions on the recent Syrian conflict keeping Americans out of yet another endless war with little to no American gain.

This might be a problem.

I spent 5 min in line at the grocery store waiting for the clerk to count the change that the man in front of me gave her. She counted it 3 times, and finally looked at the man and said $4.04?
Man: Shakes his head no.
Clerk: $3.04?
Man: Shakes his head no again, finally he told her there was $2.04.

The change he gave her was 4 pennies the rest in nickles, dimes, and quarters. Nothing tricky like a half dollar of a dollar coin.

Days I don't shop: Memorial Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas, Thanksgiving or the day after, Valentine's, Easter, Black Friday, Labor Day, Fourth of July. F a buncha that. I ain't getting out there in all the hubbub.

what can I say? I'm an offensive person with offensive opinions, which I'm exercising my "right" to express.

if anyone wishes to stop being offended: unplug your TV, your computer, shut off your smart phone, don't look at or listen to anything, plug your nose. or you could just harden the flocc up.

Sign on/reenlistment bonus: most people who join the military receive a sign on bonus. If the renenlist they can receiv a reenlistment bonus. It can range from $5,000-$80,000. Many of my infantry friends received $7,000 (of the $20,000 sign on bonus) a week after they graduated boot camp. Quite the paycheck.

Billy I do not care if you are offensive. Just be intellectually offensive. I don't care for ignorant mocking words like childish name calling, etc. (I don't think many do). At least make the mocking words intellectually stimulating and related to the discussion.

Really that is not a huge payday. And misleading to boot. When do they get the rest of the 20k? What if they don't make it through boot camp? Nada? How is that a sign-on bonus? It is really a merit bonus. I get it that it may appear to be a relatively attractive option for someone with minimal skills and poor prospects, but it isn't crazy money and many that take that path do seem to come out the other side with marketable skills and improved prospects.

It did still seem offensive and trollish to pick Memorial Day for your rant. I'll not back down from that comment regardless of your stated interest in intellectually stimulating discussion. Actually sounds to me that you are jealous of your friends that are enlisting as it is not an option for you for whatever reason, and you are really looking for validation of your belief that they are being suckered into a bad deal.

I was being facetious. Never met anyone that got a "bonus" on the first go around always some b.s. the career specialist threw in your face to sign up for four more. Army must have been handing them out like French fries.

People do it for their own reasons. I didnt care if you were there for god, country, or money dont get me killed and ill do the same is all I ever worried about.
