Really that is not a huge payday. And misleading to boot. When do they get the rest of the 20k? What if they don't make it through boot camp? Nada? How is that a sign-on bonus? It is really a merit bonus. I get it that it may appear to be a relatively attractive option for someone with minimal skills and poor prospects, but it isn't crazy money and many that take that path do seem to come out the other side with marketable skills and improved prospects.

It did still seem offensive and trollish to pick Memorial Day for your rant. I'll not back down from that comment regardless of your stated interest in intellectually stimulating discussion. Actually sounds to me that you are jealous of your friends that are enlisting as it is not an option for you for whatever reason, and you are really looking for validation of your belief that they are being suckered into a bad deal.

Ding ding ding we have a winner come on down and accept your prize for hitting the nail on the head.

Sign on/reenlistment bonus: most people who join the military receive a sign on bonus. If the renenlist they can receiv a reenlistment bonus. It can range from $5,000-$80,000. Many of my infantry friends received $7,000 (of the $20,000 sign on bonus) a week after they graduated boot camp. Quite the paycheck.

Billy I do not care if you are offensive. Just be intellectually offensive. I don't care for ignorant mocking words like childish name calling, etc. (I don't think many do). At least make the mocking words intellectually stimulating and related to the discussion.

wells, I ain'ts gots no edjamacation. I don't noes any fancy mans big werds. it musta been all that B.F. Skinner and Nietzsche I read that broked my thinking muscle. I mean, after all, one could nary be civilized if one wishes not to brandish an intellectual arsenal from their leather-bound thesaurus.

I'd rather sound like an a** than a pompous a**.

You get the rest of the bonus in small increments in monthly pay checks. Yes, you are paid during basic traing, where you also receive free food and board. If you don't make it through boot camp you only receive the monthly pay to that point and no bonus.

I never started this "rant". I merely stepped in to make a point after a previous poster was berated for his/her statement. Then name calling began and assumptions made (as in your post). I actually finished my 8 years of service and got honorably discharged (and yes I did a tour overseas where I did fire my weapon and did get shot at). Then i started on my bachelors degree. I could reenlist anytime.

But the mockery and ignorance on this thread is appalling. A pointless conversation I wish I wasn't a part of.

is this your first time on the interwebs? brutha and/or sista, the perception of ignorance is mostly in direct relation to the level of arrogance held by the accuser.

Well actually . . . Memorial Day is meant to honor Fallen servicemen.

I've never served myself and certainly never been killed-in-action. BUT I would wager that most of them would be okay with it -- seeing how that's WHY they fought and died. Or to give you the right to sit at home and watch TV. Or BBQ with your friends/family.

Do we honor semi-fallen as well? %30 of Gulf War era veterans are claiming disability related to the war.
