I was in the local goodwill yesterday and stumbled on Best Beer Home Brewing Equipment Kit, unused for $15. I got it home and found Brewers Best American Light Home Brewing Ingredient Kit inside. Many of the ingredients seem quite dried out despite being sealed. I am wondering if it would be ok to use the ingredients or if they would be spoiled. There are no experiation bates on them.

Only one way to find out--brew it! I would recommend picking up a fresh packet of dry yeast from your LHBS as the one in the kit is probably toast.

:rockin: FOR SURE! and if you could spend the next few weeks looking for a lava lamp to set the mood for drinking that would be awesome!

That DME looks like peanut butter! lol, I would say not, but what the heck I treat every batch I brew as an experiment either way.

I don't know about the DME, it looks like it soaked up moisture. See how it smells first. It should smell malty, but if sour a bit then toss it. The hops & yeast might be toast by now. Check out the ingredients to see what condition they're in.

That extract is just sugar. It will be fine. Just had some moisture get into it. A bit like when brown sugar gets some moisture.

Toss any yeast and hops.

Gonna say that I'd brew it up too. I'd even use the hops (unless they smell like cheese) and I'd definately use the dry yeast that came with the kit. I would have a backup packet of yeast and one of hops incase either was gone off.

I bought some fresh yeast to try and brew this up (the other yeast was 7-9 years past it's date). When I opened the LME there was a slight pop and sigh from the can, not what I was hoping to hear, but I proceeded anyway. when it came time to add the DME I broke it up as best as I could and tipped it in. It sank straight away and I could not mix it in fast enough. Whenther I had the heat too high or this was doomed from the start I do not know, but the extract began burning on the bottom and soon the room was filled with the aroma. I decided at that point that my time and the health of my wife and I was worth more than the money I would save continuin this batch. I abandoned, tipped it and spen the next 45 minutes scrubbing the brew pot clean from the burnt DME. I went out and purchased a new brew kit (Brewers best American Light) and brewed it up without incident.
