I'm thinking of this in my late additions. Anyone ever use these two together? Do they play nice together or are they opposing forces due to both their high aa numbers.
 
I have never used them together but I think they would be good together although Citra can be kind of overpowering to some people.
 
I'm gonna use it as a late addition at 5 min and hopstand so the high aa doesn't add to much bitterness and hopefully it just extracts the flavor.
 
My blonde wife loves citrusy IPAs so I did a recipe for Blonde Bombshell IPA. It is her favorite beer. I did FWH with Centennial and then late additions with Cascade and Apollo and then hop stand and dry hop with Cascade/Citra/Apollo. The Apollo and Cascade give it a great grapefruit flavor and aroma and the Citra adds just a touch of tropical fruit. Apollo has become my go to hop stand/dry hop addition and I've always loved Citra. Definitely go for it.
 
Citra is not really citrusy despite the name; rather, it is tropical and full of mango and lychee.

Apollo is citrusy and dank. It's very potent and reminiscent of marijuana.


Use them both sparingly in the boil or things have the possibility of getting too catty, harsh, and off-putting.

You can use both in equal amounts if adding to the dryhop, or even a hopstand around 165 F, where the alpha acids are not being isomerized.
 
I pretty much only use Apollo as late addition/hop stand/dry hop. This avoids the Mary Jane/harshness and lets the grapefruit flavor shine. And, yes, the tropical fruit flavor comes from the Citra.
 
In the end my Lhbs doesn't carry Apollo so I went with Columbus instead. The gravity sample tasted very heady with that juicy resinous character.

In the IIPA I brewed last night I ended up pairing Apollo hop oil (boiled for 10 min) with Amarillo/Simcoe (flameout) and Amarillo/Simcoe/Citra (hopstand started @ 180F for 30 minutes). Planning on dry hopping with Amarillo/Simcoe/Citra for 5 days before bottling.

I'll let you know how it turns out.
