Hey all,

My father in law is moving back to the Phillipines to retire after coming to the states and raising his family. He loves his beer and doesn't want to have to only drink San Miguel. I've fed him too many Beligians and I.P.As to ever turn back. So we are wondering if there is anyone out there who knows of any LHBS in the Phillipines, Manila in particular.

Thanks ahead of time...

I'm thinking about spending at least part of each year in the Philippines in a few years and this too has been in my thoughts. I don't think he's going to have a lot of luck, considering grain is primarily grown in cooler northern latitudes and it's a heavy bulky item. The humidity in the Philippines and the Filipinos' inattention (and inability) to proper storage doesn't bode well for grain. I'm not saying it can't be done but it'll likely be pricey.

They do, however, have honey and tropical fruit. Maybe you could convince him to drink cold San Miguels and make his own mead.

Summersolstice,

Thanks for the response. My father-in-law had concurred with everything you said. He grew up there so he understood the limitations he'd likely run into in trying to brew beer there immediately. However, he had taken a draw off of the Apfelwein (Edwort's) that I had started and the wheels started turning in his head, as far as fruit possibilities. I have to get him some good samples of mead so that he can decide if that might be a route for him to go down.

Thanks again for the comments.

Tell him I said good luck and to enjoy the SABONG ( I hope I am typing that correctly) if I am right he will know exactly what I am talking about.

If he grew up in the Philippines he's likely to have had his share of tu ba. I had some on my last trip to the bundok in Bohol:
