I want to start kegging, and I already have a kegerator with sanke hookups, so I was looking to get a 5 gallon sanke keg. The problem is that 5g sanke kegs seem to be pretty hard to find. I know I could get all the corny keg equipment from my LHBS, but I don't want to have to buy everything when all I need is a keg. Plus I'd rather not deal with adaptors and switching between fittings when I buy a commercial keg.

I have read some threads debating corny vs sanke kegs and I know some people feel that sankes can be more difficult to open and clean, but I think I could handle it. There seems to be a good amount of advice for easy opening and cleaning of sanke kegs. Plus I would prefer to have the convenience of using a hand pump tap as well if I were to bring the keg to a friend's house.

So if anyone knows any online retailers that carry 5 gallon sanke kegs in stock, or if anyone has one that they would be willing to sell(maybe someone who prefers the corny keg setup and regrets that they bought a sanke keg), please let me know.

Again, I'm looking for a 5 gallon sanke keg, not a pony keg or 1/2 barrel keg. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Hendy

That would be a good way to get a 1/2 barrel or a 1/4 barrel pony keg, but I don't know of any commercial sellers that distribute 5 gallon kegs. At least not at my local liquor stores.

Here is 5gal website: http://www.chicompany.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=167

Just a reminder if you wanted to eventually go corny you wouldn't need to buy a whole lot extra. This kit linked below would allow either style of keg to be dispensed in your system.

*OOPS sold out, nevermind*

Yeah I found that website when searching for 5g sanke kegs on a search engine, but I also noticed that they were sold out. They gave the option of emailing them to get put on a waitlist of some kind, but I don't know what kind of wait to expect, or if these items are even restocked with them frequently.

I checked out the conversion kit also and it looked great. The only problem I could think of is the lack of portability of a corny keg because it won't work with a hand pump tap if I wanted to bring it to a friends place. Any ideas on solving that problem?

Under premium micro brew section there are several 5 gal options

Awesome. Thanks. I'll definitely check them out. And I'm pretty sure I've been to this liquor store and haven't seen the 5g kegs in stock, but they must be easy to special order.

Get one of the co2 adorers that use either a paintball tank or the small disposable co2 chargers for easy dispensing on the go. You also wont oxidize your beer this way like you would with a hand pump.

Good option. I don't think oxidizing the beer would be a problem. 5 gallons would easily be a one sitting job for my usual crew!!!

So after a little more research I found that 5g sanke kegs are more frequently referee to as 1/6 barrels or torpedo kegs. They seem to be used by many breweries, including BMC. So I should be able to get one easily from a local liquor store and I'll only be out the deposit if I want to keep the keg. Thanks again for all the replies.

I may have one in my garage. I'll let you know. I may forget to look tonight. I'm running to the hospital to see my daughter, then have to take a car into the shop to drop off then pick up the boy to take home and get in bed. If I don't remember, PM me tomorrow and I'll look tomorrow.

Which, if you're not aware, is stealing.

No judgment, just letting you know.

I dunno if it is in this case. I mean I remember my Dad had a TV on top of a keg for like 10 years in the florida room out back before he returned it:). If he's not ruining/modifying it, he could return it at any time.

Do you have a Total Wine and More close? They cary 1/6 barrels ...

I do, and I just got home from there with a fresh 1/6 barrel of blue moon. Now I just have to find a way to empty it?!?!? And then I can get started on kegging.

I agree. Technically if I don't alter the keg then I'm just waiting to return it and get the deposit back. Either way, if I paid the deposit then I figure I bought the keg. If "the Man" wants to send me to jail then he better give me my $50 deposit back first.

ignore chicompany. my homebrew club tried to get a deal going with them on something, and they answered the first 2 emails, then ignored everything else, including voicemails and incoming calls. after 5 months, they responded with "sorry, we're out"
