Anybody know a good place to fill a CO2 tank in Virginia Beach VA area?

I just purchased a 20lb tank on Craigslist. After reading this thread, I took it to Fire Services, Inc. 5652 Bayside Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. (757) 464-9488.

Hydro and fill is going to be right under $40. I didn't catch the exact ammount about for the hydro, but filling a 20lb tank was $21.

I had to drop it off and it is going to take about a week because of the hydro, but you can't beat the price.

Just called the Airgas location in Portsmouth & in Chesapeake. Both quoted me the following prices: 20lb = $59.84, 5lb = $27.33, I went to the Fire Services guy on Bayside in the past, but you have to wait a week for hydro.

Waiting a week was frustrating, especially since I went around Thanksgiving so it took much longer than normal. However, you only have to hydro once every five years, so it isn't that major of an inconvenience. Plus your supporting a small local business.

For simple fills he can do it on the spot.

I've been going to these guys for about a year or so now. exchange a 5lb bottle for ~$15, but once the filled it while i waited.

I usually go to to Roberts oxygen off bainbridge in chesapeake. Haven't been in a while though, cant remember the prices. I think its Roberts oxygen...:drunk:

I do most of my business with ARCET although BOC gas is pretty good also. Priced about the same. ARCET has welding supplies so I can consolidate trips. They both exchange bottles, I've found ARCET easier if you have a bottle that doesn't have one of their stickers on it. I swapped out a 5lb CO2, a 20ft3 beer gas (CO2/N2 mix) and a 20ft3 argon bottle today for $60.

Just went to Roberts Oxygen in Greenbrier area of Chesapeake this morning. Walked in with a empty tank and walked out with a 5lb filled tank for $17 (they exchange, don't fill on the spot). Took all of 5 mins!

+1 for Fire Services, cost $13 to fill my 5lb tank. My buddy got his filled at Airgas the other day and was charged $34 and they only pressed his tank up to 300#. What a joke

I have used Statewide Fire Protection (2314 60th St, Hampton, VA 23661) every time. I've never spent more than $15 and 10 minutes.

Which reminds me, I'm out of CO2 and have about 1/2 a keg of Nut Brown Ale that I can't get to....

Atlantic Dominion Distributors at 5404 Va Beach blvd in Va Beach fills tanks while you wait takes about 5 minutes. Monday - Friday 9-4

+1 The guy that runs this place is cheap, no exchanges, fill while you wait. Cash only if I remember though.

Was planning on running out to Fire Services this week to get my 5# tank refilled and when I went to call him the phone # has been disconnected. Its been 2-3 months since my last refill. Anyone know if he's still in business? The owner is a great guy -- crossing my fingers he's just late on his bill or something.

I'm looking to get a 5# refill today -- any idea how much they charge? They're a little farther away from me than Arced, but if its worth an extra 5-10 min drive I'll head out that way. Thanks!

It has been 4 years since anyone has been on here. Anyone know any current places that are open on weekends? I can;t get away from work 9-5 M-F. I have 2 kegs in my fridge, that I would really like to drink during football tomorrow :)

Hello everyone! Thank you for the information above got my kegerator just a few weeks ago and recharged the CO2 tank in Atlantic Dominion for $30. That was definitely super quick and no questions.
But I have one: did you notice if recharging gives you less capacity than exchange? Maybe in the exchange locations they recharge the tanks with higher pressure or something like that.
My gauge shows only about 500 psi I believe and that is very close to the red line so I’m thinking for how long it will last.

Is the CO2 tank inside the kegerator by any chance? Because that will change what the gauge reads. The only way to know for sure how much CO2 they gave you is to weigh the tank.

The pressure inside a CO2 cylinder is highly dependent on temperature.
Looking at this chart the cylinder pressure would be around 550 psi at a "fridge temperature" of ~40°F...

That’s awesome! Thanks.
But does it mean the pressure will be around 500psi when the temperature is around 30f from 10% to 135% of the tank fill?

Yes, I believe that is what the author is trying to convey - as bizarre as that step function looks.
Fortunately it's fairly well outside the scope of any reasonable usage so we don't have to hurt ourselves thinking about it 😁

Cheers!

You could also look for one of the larger beer distributors, especially one who sells kegs and see if they either swap or fill CO2.

(I’m in PA, sorry if its not called a beer distributor elsewhere, thats what it is here. They sell beer in one place, they sell wine and liquor in a different place here.)
