I recently was given a few buckets of grain that are 2-3 years old. I was thinking that I might be able to use this for making wort for yeast starters. I am not sure if it is great for brewing beer because it was stored in a basement that was not completely dry at times. Can anyone suggest uses for this grain besides chicken feed? Could I make decent starter wort with it?

If it smells stale I would put it in my garden. If not I wouldnt worry about using it in a starter. Been there done that. But decant and keep it out of your primary. Made a starter out of briess 2 row that was 5 years old. Worked just fine and was pitched into a 15 gallon batch with 2112 cal lager. Didnt notice any issues and friends enjoyed it.

I am using 2+ year old grain with no problems. Stored in heavy zip-lock style bags 40-75 degrees in my garage in large tubs. I always sniff and taste the grains while getting stuff together for my next brew. Have not had to run to replace anything yet... My oldest grain sack stored base malt is just over 1 year old and I have not noticed any drop off in flavor. It is very dry here in Colorado and that my be the reason it keeps well.
