Pulled the carboy out of the fermentation chamber, only to find this on the top. It kind of smells like pond water... The pics don't really do it justice. When you get real close there are ridges like bits of sea shells.

Yeast plus bacteria I'm guessing (from the smell mostly). Tell us something about the recipe and process.

Kit was from northern brewer, American Rye. http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/american-rye-ale-extract-kit-w-specialty-grains.html Pellet hops. Did a starter... During the chilling some tap water did splash into the wort while it was cooling. Also I found the stopper didn't have a tight seal in the fermentation chamber one day, but I did fix that with a zip tie. Cooling the wort down did take longer than expected... about an hour, so maybe something floated in at that time. Been fermenting for 3 weeks in the primary. Tasted weekly... it did taste sour.

it looks like flocculating yeast to me.

but if you say it smells weird and tastes sour, perhaps something is going on?

transfer to secondary and rack underneath the yeast rafts. make sure secondary is glass just in case.

It really is hard to tell from the pictures, but it almost looks like moths. I used Pacman yeast and fermented at 63 degrees (What they advise). I mail ordered the yeast, and although it had a cold pack on it, the yeast arrived about room temp.

Brewski! You are in Tallahassee? I am headed there this weekend to visit friends.

For sanitizing, I thought I went a little commando on the StarSan. I used Oxyclean and then starsanned everything that came into contact with the wort after the boil. I also used StarSan in the airlock.

I've seen infected brews - this does not look like an infected brew. Looks like crazy yeast/hopgunk.

How long has it been fermenting?

If it tastes okay, I'd proceed as normal.

had to laugh when I saw this it kinda reminds me of capt crunch that was thrown up lol.

I don't know just made me giggle.

Let us know how it turns out and what you do.

It's been in the primary for 3 weeks. Hard to tell from the photo (couldn't get the camera to get a high quality photo) But It really looks like sharp ridged sea shells in there, moreso than gunk. It doesn't smell or taste anything like beer... has a cidery/sour taste to it.

Those pics look like images from somebody coming home from a long night out. Poop and Puke! First images doesn't look too bad, let us know how she turns out!

I'm now wondering if the shell looking organisms had to do with the yeast nutrient I used in the starter. I added the amount listed in the instructions, but then also had the nutrient from the yeast smack pack.

I can't help you on your fermenting beer, but had to add this due to the subject line of your thread.
