Hi all, home brew noob here. I've done a couple batches and had a question on my latest.

I made this hop hell batch (i can post a link to the recipe if needed)- it uses a lot of fermentables for a 5 gallon batch

9.00 lbs Amber Malt Extract Syrup
4.00 lbs Light Malt Extract Syrup
2.00 lbs Honey

15 lbs of extracts for a 5 gallon batch. is that correct? - just seems like an disproportionate amount of sugars to water for a 5 gallon batch.

thanks

joe

yep - recipe says it's an arrogant bastard clone - lots of hops in it too

for this recipe
OG 1.080
FG 1.018
IBU 98
SRM 11
ABV 8.00

so it sounds like it is possible to have all those fermentables in a 5 gallon batch?

thanks

You can put as many fermentables as you want in the wort. Whether the yeast can handle them all and you can get a good beer is another thing. That said, you don't have nearly anything unusual with that OG. As long as you have a healthy fermentation you should be ok.

Well that's very strange. I ran it thru a calculator and I'm getting 1.115 as an OG on that..not 1.080. Nothing wrong with 1.015 but confused as to how 13 pounds of extract and 2 pounds of honey can not get over 1.110 or 1.120 ( i had a typo above).

I make arrogant bastard clones often and i use 13.5 pounds 2 row, and 1.5 lbs crystal 120. No honey. Cant imagine honey in an arrogant bastard. Notice that my grain bill is 15 lbs of all grain. If I converted that to extract (and this recipe is dead on arrogant bastard) it would be 9.75 lbs extract (use light) then the 1.5 lbs of crystal 120. skip the honey. That also comes out right around the 1.080 OG.

You'll have a fine beer, but may have to be real patient with it. If you didn't make it already you might want to put it thru Mr Maltry..this needs a lot of yeast.

huh - good to know on the yeast - the original recipe called for 2 packets of Safale US-05 Dry Ale Yeast - i only used one vial of pitchable dry english ale yeast. so i guess if i don't get much of a ferment this first week i may have to get more yeast to pitch.

thanks all for the tips!! :)
