American Stout.....looking for some help

I have never made a stout and would like to make an American stout. I know there is quite a bit of art to creating a decent one. Any advice?

No more art in brewing a stout than any other beer IMHO. Just takes a good recipe.

It depends on if you are brewing for competition or not. If for comps, I have had very good luck with the CYBI Shakespeare Stout recipe as posted on the brewing network, though I now sub out some of the oatmeal for extra roast barley to please the judges. If you just want to brew a good tasting beer, that recipe is a great place to start anyways.
