Hi, my friend is allergic to beer, not all beer, but some... He has celiac disease....

He can drink some beer, and them sometimes only so much of a beer before the symptoms take over.

He loves beer though, and I was wanting to make a beer that would be less problematic for him....

He tried a wheat summer ale and yes, that wasnt great for his ailments...

Any ideas of an extract beer what would be less problematic for him ?

And no I dont want to try brewing gluten-free beer... I bought some and yuck its not very good....

Thanks in advance...

All beer is no good for true celiacs. If you want to make some for him, but don't want to use sorghum, millet, or buckwheat...you're going to have a tough time. You can try treating your beers with Clarity Ferm, and depending on his sensitivity, it may work out. Otherwise, start making cider....

Celiac = gluten intolerance. Typical beer grains have gluten. So either you brew with grains that don't have gluten, or your buddy keeps getting sick.

My sister has celiac disease so I am quite familiar. You can rule out barley and wheat and potentially oats as well. Grains that are ok: corn, rice... what other grains are even used in beer besides what I have mentioned?

My mother has celiacs as well as a good friend of the family. People who have it tend to have different tolerances and some are willing to deal with the consequences every so often. My mom cheats every blue moon... and usually ends up regretting it. My friend, literally can't eat anything with even trace amounts of gluten without it be agonizing sick for him.

I'd get some clarification for your friend on how his tolerances are. Gluten free beers with honey in them tend not to be too bad. Other than that, maybe a light shandy style beer to cut the gluten ingredients.

I have to stick with ciders and gluten free kits as the best option though. Just an FYI, I've heard that certain yeasts are not gluten free either.

Great to know, thanks.....

Any off the shelf gluten free beers that actually taste good ?

I guess making beer is out..... thanks in advance...

Making beer isn't out. I've made a very good gluten free beer for a buddy using only sorghum extract and cascade hops

If they can tolerate a little gluten, Miller Lite is an option. It has a substantial amount of rice, and most of the proteins are filtered out, leaving very little gluten. It is a beer that you just can't hope to reproduce on a homebrew set-up.
