After 6 successful extract batches I brewed my first all grain batch. I was fired up when I took a hydrometer and hit my OG.

Now that I think about it there was a bunch of trub/crap in my tube when I took my reading. Now I'm thinking my OG and efficiency was off due to the gunk floating.

Is this possible?

Do you guys wait until your carboy/bucket settles before pitching and taking a gravity reading?

Thanks!

unless it was a thick sludge the the hydrometer was resting in, i wouldn't worry about it.

I do wait til the break material settles before taking a hydrometer reading from the primary fermenter. If the sample is turbid and opaque, it's not that reliable (the trub will cause the hydrometer to be more buoyant). If it was mostly clear, then it was probably fine.
