Being as I didn't have any recipe already planned out this weekend but I wanted to do something, I ran a test to see if my electic stove could boil the water amounts needed for all grain. Surprisingly, it was actually able to boil 6 1/2 gallons of water. :ban: I boiled it for an hour and measured the water amount to see how much boiled off so I could plug the numbers into BeerSmith and it looks like 11%.

It was just plain water, and sugary wort will give slightly different results, but it's a starting point.

I'm using an 8 gallon SS pot, the same one I started with. My last five batches have been PM (about 25-35% extract), and I was boiling 4 1/2 gallons for those. I'm planning on doing an AG batch next weekend just to see if this will work - I really want to do AG but I do not want to have to go outside to do it.

Your house is going to be awfully muggy but at least it will smell like beer. :)
 
AG is certainly fun. I don't do them all the time and I can't do them inside. You must have a very special stove.
 
I started out last summer outside on the patio. I like it in the summer but didn't have any desired to frezze my **s off this past winter so went on inside. My stove can handle my 5 gal batches but it takes alot longer. Oh well, it's still brewing beer and I DON'T freeze. Somehow I think that might take the fun out of it. Besides, I like the way the house smells when I'm done.:rolleyes:
 
In preparation for not using pre-aerated top-up water, I just ordered an oxygenation kit (O2 regulator, diffusion stone on a wand, and tubing). I don't know how badly I need it, but new toys are always welcome :D
 
Ran another test for lack of anything else to do, and kept better notes this time. I filled the pot with 6 1/2 gallons of about 120 degree tap water and put the lid on, and turned the stove on max. It took about 45 minutes to get to a roaring boil. I moved the lid so that it was covering about 2/3 of the pot and the stove kept a roaring, violent boil for the entire 60 minutes. Afterwards I measured the water after cooling it down to about 100 and ended up with pretty much 5 1/2 gallons exactly.

I don't know what the wattage or BTUs on the stove are, but it boiled off a gallon in an hour in an 8 gallon SS pot from that starting 6 1/2 gallons of water. What are typical electric stoves capable of?
