Upon returning from snowboarding today...the water in my air lock had turned brown and the lid seemed as though it had been spewing foam all day.

Is this normal?

It happens all the time, thats why many use blow off tubes. Pull it out, clean it up, and replace it. Or put on a blow off tube.

So your wort/beer fermented up through the airlock. yes, this is normal. Just cover the opening of your fermentation vessel with a piece of sanitized foil while you wash the airlock and replace once clean with new alcohol or sanitizer (whatever you use).

My primary is a 6 gallon plastic bucket fermenter.....currently holding a cream stout.
