I bought the AHS Anv ESB kit and I am wondering if the hops additions are adequate. This is my first ever ESB, so I want to nail it and have a classic example of the recipe.

Here are the basics of the recipe:
grains
1 lb of crystal 90L malt 1/2 lb of Crystal 60L malt
-
extract
6.5 lbs of extra pale

hops
1 oz target for 60 mins (AA = 8.6)
1 oz northdown - 3/4 at 15 mins and 1/4 at 5 mins (AA 5.7)

that is it. Seems like ESB should have more hops. I am not a hop head, so I am not looking for a hoppy representation, but I am also not looking for a malty representation. I want a great classic representation and this recipe maybe it, but I just want to be sure.

The HBU's per gallon are around 5.5 and I thought that an ESB would be higher than that. I could be figuring HBUs out incorrectly and I am not sure how to figure out IBUs.

I am wondering if I should add some DME and maybe another hop.

Any recommendations?

thanks,
Rob

The hop schedule looks pretty good to me for an ESB. I would replace the 5 minute addition with 3/4 oz at flameout which would give me a bit more aroma, but fewer IBU's.
The only thing about that recipe that I don't like is the 1 lb crystal 90. That sounds like a great deal of crystal to me.

I just kegged the Anniversary ESB from AHS. It tasted very nice! You'll like it, I'm sure. It had just enough hops in it to try and pinpoint their flavors, but you could still get all the roasty-toasty (thats not real helpful beer slang, sorry!) flavors from the malts. For $20, you'll think it rocks!

thanks. good luck with your ESB. I think I am going to stick with the recipe as is after doing some research.
