Hello,

I have .5lb of Ahhhroma hops and have no idea what to pair them for, as I've never had any beer that uses them. My plan was to use Ahhhroma in the dry hop mostly (as I've read that's the best use of it), so I need at least a hot side hop and some dry hop pairing that go well with it. I was thinking of using Simcoe, Cashmere and/or Motueka, but I'm clueless.

Thanks, Roger.

Hi Roger. I’m a pro brewer of over 15 years and was just googling these hops while drinking the fourth IPA I’ve made that uses them and noticed no one responded to your question. I make 1-2 new IPAs per week, every week at our brewery. We use every hop variety we can find. Most new varieties don’t have enough intensity of citrus/tropical that customers want to compete with hops like Citra. Ahhhroma, which we buy from NY Hop Guild, is one of the exceptions. I’m really digging this hop and the ‘23 crop I got is even better than the ‘22 that first sold me on it. Bright lemon is the easiest note to pick out, but it also has this thick layer of fresh American hoppiness in a good way like breaking open a hop cone and smelling the goodness inside. I would compare it most similarly to Citra, in that it’s fairly neutral and non distinct in character which makes it play well with almost any other variety, all while packing a significant punch of citrus and freshness to increase the aroma intensity of the beer. So, for first timers, I’d recommend just pretending it’s Citra and see how that goes for you. Cheers!

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. I really like the Idaho 7 and Citra combo, so I will swap Citra for Ahhhroma and see how that turns out.

I also have some leftover Sabro (I'm not a huge fan of Sabro to be honest), I might also do a Sabro, Ahhhroma and possibly Strata or Mosaic combo, to see if I can highlight that "piña colada" profile that I've read Ahhhroma has.

Do you have any recommendations on whether to use Ahhhroma on the whirlpool? The scarce information I've found online seems to suggest it's best used as dry hop.

Cheers, Roger.
