I think that raising children around alcohol is a very good thing. If they are raised around it and view it as something that is not taboo or "bad" then I feel that they will be less likely to abuse it when they are older.

My family is of German heritage, and beer has always been part of the family. Growing up it wasn't a problem for one of us kids to have a beer with the family. It was never something that I figured was a bad thing. I never had any desire to get drunk or just slam back alcohol. Growing up I saw a lot of my friends drink heavily and it was never something that appealed to me. Beer & alcohol was just part of growing up like eating a meal. My parents did not want me drinking in public, but they were ok with me having a beer with them from time to time. I hope this doesn't bring a lot of controversy, but I plan to do the same with my children some day. I think if kids are brought up around it, they will be less likely to abuse it later because it won't be this big deal when they finally get their hands on it.

To get back to topic though, I believe the age to make alcohol is 21 is most states, but technically its only cooking until that yeast is added.

I am 18 years old and i love to brew because making a good beer is an amazing thing. I enjoy all parts from choosing the ingredients to bottling. Beer is no longer something to chug or shotgun but something to be respected and enjoyed. Not only that but I will hopefully be going to college to get a brewing degree at UC Davis after I finish my first 2 years of college so it has given me a potential career. Homebrewing has also allowed me to show my friends that beer is something special and they enjoy it more now also. If it is illegal for me to brew I don’t know, but it should be legal because it teaches responsibility.

I agree with you 100% my friend. Beer is a form of art. Let those college kids drink their nasty budweiser, leave the real beer to us responsible consumers. :mug:

Having the drinking age be 21 is an abomination in my eyes. Kids can go and kill/die for their country, but they can't drink a beer? This blows my mind and infuriates me to no end. This policy needs to be changed big time.

It is easy to forget that not that long ago, There was no legal age limit for consumption, and when it was instituted, the age was much lower than it is now. Thanks to the previously mentioned Nanny State, the legal age has steadily increased, producing what i believe to be a more dangerous culture of consuption, not a safer one.

Personally I like the German model:

Drink at 16, drive at 18.

That way kids have a few years to learn their limits before getting behind the wheel. Oh, and they also TRAIN you to drive there, as opposed to handing a license to any blind, 1-armed monkey with a pulse.
