I recently upgraded to AG brewing, I was just wondering rather then find out the hard way.. what is the max amount of grains i can fit into my 5 gal Igloo Mash Tun? Trying to figure out my limits as far as how big of beer I can brew.. I am doing 5 gal. batches.

As a practical matter, generally you can get up to about 12 pounds of grain in there, if you mash with less water and are very careful, depending on your false bottom. I don't recommend it, though, as I had some trouble stirring it!

I've done grainbills as large as 15lbs in my 5 gallon round cooler. Basically a 1:1 ratio and you're right up at the top of the cooler when the dust has settled. It's fairly thick (comparatively speaking) and hard to stir. BUT, it's worked out fine for producing big beers. I would recommend working with strike water that's a little hotter than needed and doughing in at 0.9:1 ratio. After you've stirred everything up well, top up using your remaining strike water or cold water to hit your target mash temp. You won't have any room for temperature adjustments once you get within 1/2 inch of the rim. I don't think I'd attempt anything larger than 15lbs though. You could say that I don't mind living on the edge, or rim :D

Thanks guys, i will take that information and run with it! I can't pull up that link.. it must be the computer I am on.
