Wait 'til summer. The warmer groundwater makes a helluva difference. I'm not saying it's bad.....we all have to deal with it. It just kinda takes the thrill out of chilling.

That's what I've done, too, but only running my garden hose through a bucket filled with ice water. I'm going to convert my immersion chiller into a pre-chiller for that job, and route that through a CFC.

Seems to me the trick is metering the flow.....both of the water through the pre-chiller, and the wort through the CFC for maximum effect.
