Well, life is always interesting.

Got together with my brother and dad to brew a Red Stripe clone today. We've recently upgraded our kettle from the aluminum turkey fryer pot to a SS 36 quart kettle, so this was the time to try it out.

Unfortunately, we have been using a brinkmann turkey fryer for our heat source. It turns out that it has a safety switch and a retaining ring custom fit to the aluminum pot. So about 3 minutes after we lit the fire and started the boil, the dang thing cut out. Of course it took us about 3 relights before we figured out what was going on.

In the meantime, we had started the recipe, which has us steeping some specialty grains from cold to 170 and holding there for 10 minutes.

Needless to say, we aren't following the recipe exactly. :cross: The grains steeped at between 100 and 140 for 4 hours instead. During that time we diagnosed the problem with our heat source and acquired a new one (better too--a 100,000 BTU unit instead of the 45,000 BTU unit we were using).

I am trying very hard to relax and not worry. And to paraphrase my mother at this point "A man has to believe in something. I believe I will have another drink!" :mug:

So we will see what
