Whirlfloc should be added within the last 15 minutes to avoid denaturing it.
What happens if its added at flame out?
Does it have to boil for a certain period of time?

Same for the Wyeast Yeast Nutrient - what if you ad dit at flame out?

I assume for both of these, they say 15 minutes to make sure its well distributed. Or is there a chemical reaction that needs to take place at boiling temperature?

IDK, I would venture a guess it has more to do with making sure it has enough time to be sanitized.

well, whirlfloc has to dissolve and get dispersed into the wort while it is hot in order to do it's job, I think. Certainly ought to be true for irish moss. But if you go too long in the boil the effect is somewhat reversed, as i understand it.

yeast nutrient just has to get dissolved and sanitized by the heat. flameout should be no problem. It'll get mixed in when you transfer to the fermenter, or when you aerate.

I deslove it in water first, but still add it when I toss in my chiller. I add my fermax at the same time as well. It just seems like a good time to do it for me.

From the Midwest Supplies website:

Whirlfloc Tablets are an enhanced blend of Irish Moss and purified carrageenan that aids in the coagulation and settling of haze-producing proteins and beta glucans. Use one tablet per 10 gallon batch (For 5 gallon batches, cut a tablet in half. Adding a whole tablet won't really gain you anything), and add it with 5 minutes remaining in the boil. Yes, 5 minutes is correct. According to the manufacturer, if Whirlfloc is in the boil for any longer than 10 minutes, the active ingredients become denatured and therefore will not do their job.

Got this from Midwest's site....

Morebeer's instructions also say 5 mins.

HAHA, just a minute too late! GMTA!

Whirfloc = 5 minutes, the best place for the yeast nutrient is in the mixed into the cooled wort when you pitch. You can use FermAid K at 1 gram per gallon of wort, mix it into a thin paste before adding, you can use water or wort.
