Adding Whiskey ABV Calculation

Hey Guys,
I brewed a Vanilla Smoked Whiskey Porter recently and am interested in how to adjust the ABV for the whiskey that was added. Here's the facts:

• OG 1.064
• 7 Day Primary Fermentation @ 68
• 7 Day soak of 3 vanilla beans (scraped) in 200ml Jack Daniels No 7
• "Vanilla bean whiskey coctail" added to the secondary bucket
• Porter moved to the secondary
• Gravity after primary 1.020 (I'm guess I should have taken my reading before the vanilla bean whiskey coctail)

So the ABV according to Beer Smith is 5.8%. How do I account for the whiskey cocktail?

Two thoughts: First, why worry about it. Second, just do the math(s) based on volume. How much volume and at what ABV. You're 200 ml of liquid added about 80 ml (is JD7 40%??) of etoh to the entire volume.

Now I just reread that you didnt take gravity pre-cocktail....

I'd stick with #1 and not to worry about it! But if you have to just figure you added about .4% ABV to the batch (2.7/640) and leave it at that.

I don't think 7 ozs of Jack in 5 gallons is going to make any noticeable difference to the gravity measurement.

How to figure the alcohol addition:

5 gallons beer = 640 ozs
Added Jack = 7 ozs
abv of addition = 40%

Increase abv = 7*40/647 = 0.45% abv

Cool..... So I've read that the gravity of most whiskeys is .924-.947, did adding the 200ml of JD affect my gravity reading? If so, how much?

It should have a minimal effect I would think.

For example:
7*(.935) + 640*(x) = 647*(1.020)
X = 1.0209 would be the approximate SG before the whiskey was added (assuming you had exactly 5 gallons to start)
