Hello all. My apologies if there is another thread on this, I could not find it. Is there a formula to determine how much DME to add to boil to raise OG?

Thanks In Advance!

DME adds 46 points/per lb when dissolved in 1 gallon. You need to figure out the total points in your current beer (1-gravity*1000)*volume; the total points you want in your beer (1-target gravity*1000)*volume. Subtract for the difference then divide by 46 for amount of DME.

eg.

current beer: 5 gallons of 1.045
(1-1.045)*1000 =45 points/gallon
45 x 5 gallons =225 total points

target beer: 5 gallons of 1.050
(1-1.050)*1000=50 points/gallon
50 x 5 gallons = 250 total points

250-225 = 25 points needed

25/46 = 0.54 lb of DME

Hats off to you.

Thanks. For the record, I did several searches and got zip. I really love this site, and honestly love getting the help from another brewer(s) over spending money on software.
