Added priming sugar directly to wort - ruined?

Hi,

I'm brewing my first batch. I'm doing it from a kit where all the extract, hops, yeast and priming sugar was measured out.

In my excitement after 2 weeks of fermentation and good OG and FG readings, I stirred the priming sugar directly into the wort instead of following the instructions to boil water and dissolve the sugar there before adding it to the wort.

Did I just ruin my batch?

Also, I only have 1 bucket (it has a spigot). I used this to ferment the wort so now I'll be bottling from it. After more research I see most people use separate buckets for fermentation and bottling. What can I expect from this newbie method?

Thanks!

Rich

First, use this as a learning experience. Now, relax! Chances are, you didn't ruin your beer. If you only have one bucket, set it on the counter over the dishwasher (if you have one,) stir gently (with a sanitized spoon) and let it settle an hour. Open the dishwasher door to catch any drips, and go ahead and bottle your brew using sanitized bottles, hose, and bottle filler. Your first few bottles might have a bit more trub (yeast & sediment) than the rest, but it won't hurt anything. Bottle as normal. Keep them in a nice dark, room temperature place (a closet works well) for two to three weeks, then enjoy. BTW, how much priming sugar did you put in the fermenter? Here's a good video on how to do this (disregard the part about adding the priming sugar since you already did that.) Ed

I would put the lid back on and let it ferment out the sugar you added. Give it another two weeks to settle out.

Get a second bucket. Siphon out of the primary into the bottling bucket adding your cooled, boiled, priming sugar, trying not this disturb what is on the bottom of the primary.

Bottling from primary can be done but you have to measure sugar into each bottle. Been there done that. Works but tedious.

Your beer is not ruined. It will take a little more time though.

If you use a bottling wand with all that stuff floating in your beer you're going to get it stuck OPEN and it will be a mess.

All the best,

I added 4.5 oz of priming sugar to about 4.5 gallons of wort. I will go ahead and bottle it and see how it turns out. Yes - a good learning experience.

Thanks!

If you stirred it when adding the sugar, you are better served by allowing it to ferment out. Get another bucket and more priming sugar and wait for it to ferment out the new sugar first. Otherwise, you will have a lot of yeast in your bottles.
