First time kegging here and I think I messed it up, wanted to run it by the community to see what everyone thinks.

- filled a 5 gallon pin lock keg with appropriate Star San to water mixture, pressurized with CO2 and pushed all the star san out.

- purged the keg 6 times with CO2.

- filled keg from Fastferment with provided tube (sanitized).

*Here's where I went wrong. The tube did not reach the bottom, maybe only about halfway. So the bottom half of my beer was splashed in to the bottom and the top half was poured gently. Whoops.*

- finished by pressuring the keg woth CO2 and releasing pressure 6 times.

So did I aerate the beer? Not sure if it works like this, but hoping since I pushed out th O2 that I didn't harm the beer.

Given the proper purging regimen I'd guess there was minimal harm done, though filling through the open lid wasn't optimal at all.
Was the tubing supposed to be connected to a beer coupler so you could attach it to the Out post and keep the keg lidded?
On a pin lock you'd also need to plug on a gas connect (with no tubing) to act as a vent, but that would be the best way to go next time...

Cheers!

Ideally yes, I would have wanted to go though the outlet and have a vent for the inlet. However I'm using a Fastferment conical fermenter and the line was too wide for the connections I have. This was my first time using either the fastferment or a keg, so a lot of learning happened today.

I'm happy to hear the damage should be minimal. I'm opening this keg for St. Patricks Day and I'll post my findings then.

In the meanwhile I think I'm going to try and design a system with cam and groove connections for the fastferment where the tubing will be the same size as the hardware for my keg.

Agree that your beer should be fine. I have a fastferment also I have used a couple of adapters to go from the fastferment to the liquid post on the keg. It's fun to do it that way, but really there is probably no difference between that way and what you did, other than peace of mind (though you should minimize the splashing).

to connect the fastferment to the keg post you need to get adapters to get you from 1/2" barb (I'm pretty sure that is the FF hose size) to 1/4" female flare, which you can then screw on to your keg QD. I found what I needed at home depot.

Hook the FF to the liquid post and relieve pressure as needed from the gas post, cheap & easy insurance.
