A year with no beer (or wine, liquor, mead, etc.) ...could you do it?

all of them...at once.

you didnt have to do it, but you commited to it just to do it, do you think could you last the whole year?

A year with no beer (or wine, liquor, mead, etc.) ...could you do it?

I could, but I wouldn't want to... I only drink beer and wine anyways, reserving the wine I like to drink right now since I can't afford to replace it. IF I only had mead running at this time, I would be looking at 9-12 months before drinking it anyway. Thankfully, I have beer to hold me over...

Not to mention, beer is GOOD FOR YOU!! :D They knew this back in colonial days. People who didn't drink paid a higher premium on life insurance, and were probably more miserable to boot... :D

"Alewives in Colonial America brewed a special high-proof "groaning ale" for pregnant women to drink during labor. In fact, during the Colonial period, alcohol abstainers had to pay a certain life insurance company premiums that were 10% higher than that of drinkers. "

Full write-up is here

A brewer (home or otherwise) that doesn't drink (at all) is like a vegetarian lion... Sure, it can survive, but it will be a pathetic shadow of what it could be.

BTW, how do you take into account religious ceremonies? Where wine, especially, is an integral part of it...

Maybe before I ever started, it was no problem. But back then I was a stoner. Now I guess I could if I HAD to. But I would not by choice. I'd sooner quit food.

Sure...did it the first 16 years of my life. Ha.

But I'd probably never go back to beer if I did. :(

I dry out for one month every year, just to do it. I don't like it and the first few days are a bit tough, as are the last couple days waiting for the drinking date. Of course after a month of not drinking, two usually gets me pretty hammered. :drunk: Could I do it? Yes. Would I want to for any reason? For a year? F*** no.

I could do it....

But I won't likely ever do it....

No one is getting out of this shi* alive so why not enjoy it while we are here?, and beer and wine are somethings I enjoy

yes and no. I could do it, but I never would do it for the reason you mention.(just to prove it to myself?) But I know I could cause I've quit smoking cold turkey twice no problem:D If the doc said its over and the second doc said its over and the fifth doc said its over and the wife said its over, i guess i'd quit.

No. There are 2 things that I don't ever want to give up. Beer and sailing. Too bad homebrew isn't any good in a swell.

You are only going to have so many drinks in your life. Some people have all the drinks they should have by the time they're 25 or 30. I'd like to make sure that I don't hit that magic number until I'm a very old man.

I have drank once in the past 2 months, which is saying something for me!

I decided to lay off a bit to get myself back in shape and to just take a break. Now that I have not been drinking I don't feel like it.... scary!

so, yes I could go a year if I wanted to. Not sure if i really want to push it out that far, but gonna wait at least until i drop another 10lbs.

Is it considered drinking if you just have a beer or two with dinner? If so, not sure if I could go a whole year.

If we're talking "drinking" as in getting so loaded that you pass out on your buddy's kitchen counter, with your feet in the sink, then sure that's easy.

If I quit drinking for a year, I'd definitely lose a good 20lbs or more.

I believe any amount of consumption is considered drinking in this particular thread... Not just to incredible excess :drunk:

Well I went dry for about 7 months last year when i was in Iraq. I missed beer, but I wasn't 'hurting'. And while I missed the drinking of delicious homebrew, I also missed the hobby itself. Suffice to say my brew schedule is planned out for the rest of the year.

When I left, I stopped in Qatar for a night and was allowed to get 2 drinks. I got a Guinness and a Leffe Blonde. I was so upset, they tasted absolutely horrid to me. I was worried my pallette lost the love for beer because these are two beers I have enjoyed in the past. But not to fear, I got home and made up a batch of my house ale. I have to say, it was like tasting my first homebrew all over again. Glorious.

So could I do it? Yes. But like others, I would never choose to give it up.

my willpower is strong enough, that I don't have to torture myself like that just to find out.

'course, after I'm incarcerated for disorderly manslaughter (tm), when someone steals my beer, then YES, I can.

Seems like you would have better lucky asking people to go without oxygen for a year... :drunk: Or maybe to not use any kind of deodorant for a full year... :cross:

let's compromise, I'll see if I can go without BUYING beer for a year.

(close enough?)

Just to prove to myself I could, then NO, I would not do it. However, I have gone without it for over a year before due to medical reasons. Didn't like it but.....
