Hello all,

I have a question relating to calculating Tinseth's formula for IBU's by hand. I'm creating a brewing spreadsheet and would like it to be as error free as possible.

In the Formula:

IBU = Utilization * ((AA% * Oz of Hop * 7490)/Gallons of Wort)

Utilization = Bigness factor * Boil Time factor

It is the bigness factor of the formula that I am wondering about. The formula for bigness factor is:

1.65 * 0.000125^(Wort Gravity-1)

I have seen some say that O.G. should be used for Wort Gravity, and others say that pre-boil gravity should be used.

I'm not really that hung up about this because unless you have your beer tested by a lab you are probably miscalculating some portion of you IBU because of different brewing systems but i would like this to be as accurate as I can make it.

Also If I use the pre-boil for my Wort Gravity measurement would I then use the amount of wort I have collected pre-boil to divide the rest of the equation.

Thanks in advance
