I am new to brewing and was wondering if there was a list on here of the different styles and what their characteristics are? Just started to get into what my family considers fancy beer and would like to read and understand what each style has to offer.....

Thanks. I am enjoying all the info I am getting around here but I sometimes get confused when everyone starts talking about different styles.

then don't folow them! buy some different malts...get familiar with how much to add to a mash, and smell them...why not invent your own style! break the chain

edit: if someone can copy me and think up a catchie market term like "Brüt IPA" and get famous for it, you can do it too!

Fancy beer. I like that term.
To me it could be defined as "anything beyond an inexpensive American-style light lager" and can be as simple, sophisticated, or needlessly complicated as you want to make it. Don't be fooled by cost or marketing. Some of the best beer you can drink is unsophisticated and simple, made by hand, at home.

Yes they call it "fancy beer"....lol. Around here if it ain't Miller lite it isn't beer. I have started trying many of the local beers and like several. Want to try my hand at making some of my own. But I just dont understand what the difference is between an Ipa and a stout. Just trying to figure out what each means and what makes one an ipa and one the other.

the difference between ipa and a stout, are a pound or two of either hops or roasted malt/barley (there's porters too!):tank:

edit: roasted barley is unmalted, black patent is malted THEN roasted, which carmelizes the mashed in kernel sugars....so one is roasty, the other carmely...i couldn't actually tell you what styles are what but that's the difference with the malt...i'm more of a malt head then a hop head, so you'd have to ask someone else about the difference between chinook, and nugget for a ipa..

Believe me, there's enough reading on the InterWebz about beer topics to keep you occupied for weeks ... and if you want to learn, this forum is the right place.
I have been lurking and reading around here for months. I brewed one extract kit a few months ago but had to dump it due to moving. I was ready to start one today but am in brew day interruptus.

just remember there's stupid people that don't know the difference between viscosity, and density...like me! lots of good ideas, just verify them for yourself.....can't ask google question's you don't know, and like rome, all google homebrew searches lead here!

edit: try googling "site:homebrewtalk.com 'question'" it's search is better then the local one!
