I purchased a one gallon recipe tonight to make an English brown ale. It's composed of light malt extract, Crystal and Chocolate malt (more of the former than the latter), 1 ounce of Kent Goldings pellet hops (which I was told to use a third of), and Windsor British style beer yeast. The store put it together for me. This whole "British Ale" thing is so foreign to me. I feel like a dirty filthy redcoat.

My LHBS has closed and they provided me no instruction. I didn't ask. It felt too much like asking for directions. I'm guessing I'll do a 60 minute boil after I steep. I know English Brown Ales tend to be malty and not hoppy, with that being said, when do I add hops? Last five minutes like aromatics? Or the beginning of the boil? Or the middle?
Wish me bloody good luck!
Thanks,
William

If there is only one hop addition and no explicit instructions, I would assume a 60 min boil with hops at the beginning.

Go to Brewer's Friend website and put it in their recipe calculator. My favorite brown uses 3/4 of the hops at 60min,and the remaining at 0, but you need to get the IBU's right or it may be too sweet or too bitter.

i'd use 1/2 to 3/4 oz of the hops for the full 60 minute boil, KG's are typically only about 5% AA, so it won't be overly bitter. Add what's left at 0-5 minutes left in the boil.
