7.5 Gal OK?

I am going to start AG brewing but had a question. I know that an 8 gal pot is recommended so your 5 gal wort will not boil over. However, I have found a 7.5gal pot on sale (it comes in a turkey deep fryer kit). I figure that way I'll get a burner as well! Will this do or should I stick with the 8 gal? Also, does anyone have any experience with using turkey deep fryers for home brew? I know the burners tend to be about 50 000Btu? Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that with AG, you will start out with much more than 5 gallons of wort, and you boil it down to the 5 gallon mark.

I'm about to switch to AG, and the guys here told me that an 8 gallon pot was a MINIMUM size, and 10 gallons would be much better.
 
I just wanted to chime in that I can boil 6.5 gallons in my 7.5 gallon turkey fryer pot and I figured out that it's because it's a taller skinny shape. The taller it is, the more headspace you get out of that empty gallon.

You can probably get by with 7.5 but a 10 gallon would be much easier and no real worries about a boil over. You will have to watch it carefully. I have an 8 gallon pot and wish it was 10. A lot of brewers use the turkey fryers. I have a Bayou classic SQ-14 that was $50.00 and it works really well. Link > http://www.weliveoutside.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=35
 
I use the 7.5 gallon pot that came with my turkey fryer and it works great!. I stay on the throttle though to keep boilovers from happening. I like to end up with 6 gallons in the pot and just over 5 gallons of mostly clean wort in the carboy.

Amen, brother.

Me too. I must say that even though I would prefer a 10 gallon kettle, I find the 7 gallon one I now use to be just good enough for a 5 gallon finished brew as I split the difference with another pot on my stove.
 
I have a 7 1/2 stainless turkey fryer. It is what I started with though I have since switched to a keggle.
I boiled 6 1/2 gallon batches in the turkey fryer with no problem but you do have to watch for boil overs especially at the start of the boil and when adding hops. I just lifted mine off the fire to settle it down then set it back on the fire. It only needs to be away from the heat for a few seconds but you may need to do it several times till everything calms down. Once it does you should be okay. It will be in the neighborhood of 50 to 55 pounds and naturally it's hot so be careful, wear gloves. If you have abrew buddy even better. You can also spray the foam with water from a spray bottle, sounds crazy but it works. Again you have to watch it close and spray anytime the foam starts building up.
I went to the keggle to brew larger batches, other than that I would still be using the fryer pot.
 
I have a 45,000 BTU burner, works AWESOME, and a 30 qt pot for 5 gallon batches, anything smaller would not work, but mine works great
