I'm going to be brewing a 5 gal batch next tues but only have a 5 gal stockpot. I won't have enough room for sparging and room to prevent boil over. Any tips?

I was thinking about brewing a small 4 gal total (sparge included) concentrated mash and then adding water to the fermentor to dilute to proper amounts but I'm not sure if that would screw things up, especially relating to an under volume sparge.

I do 5.25 gal batches in a 6.5 gal kettle which starts filled to the brim. I watch very closely as it comes to a boil and have a spray bottle at the ready. I always have at least a small boil over. In your case I'd boil top up water going into the fermenter.

In essence, you will be diluting your wort by adding water after the boil. Can you use a smaller second pot or borrow one?
