So I was brewing an IPA kit that I bought from my local homebrew shop.

I followed EVERYTHING to the T and here I come, to the last phase which is to seal my ferementing bucket. I seal it, then put the aerating piece in and *POP* the rubber around the ****ing seal falls into my bucket AFTER i had put all the yeast in!

SO I went fishing for a tiny rubber piece.

Here comes the infected IPA :(

Shouldn't have bothered fishing for it. Just leave it and wrap your airlock stem with plastic wrap or something then re-sanitize it and put it on.

Although, about a million people on here have done the exact same thing as you and guess what? The beer came out fine.

RDWHAHB.

Should've just left it... did you at least use a sanitized ladle or something to get it out instead of fishing in there with your arm?

Either way... RDWHAHB. You'd be amazed at how tough it is to totally ruin a batch.

I rinsed my whole arm in diluted bleach to attach a piece in my fermenter... Everything was fine.

I hope you submersed your entire arm in a bucket of starsan for about 30 mins first! haha..

Yes, I had the same ladle I was using to fish out the hops with the entire time (3 different batches added during the boil). I fished it out with that.

I figured the problem was the sprinkled yeast I STIRRED in the batch

well not to go on and on and on (let see what happens this time) and hijack this thread but rinsed with cooled boiled water.... jesus you guys give me no credit lol

on another note though, I rinse almost everything I bleach (yes with tap water) a lot of others do this as well. I have never had an infection.

lol, I did this. However i was chewing gum when I lost the seal to my bucket. I quickly grabbed some star san and sanitized my gum for a few minutes. Then I stuck my airlock in the hole with the gum. No problems whatsoever.

Now I don't even bother with airlocks on my bucket (or carboys). I leave the lid loose and go by gravity (I put a piece of aluminum foil over the lid hole).

When you do this, do you usualy put an airlock on after fermentation settles down? How long (in days) more or less is it that you leave the lid like this?

Just use a long spoon thats what i did but dont armpit the thing! It takes a few minutes but you will find it :) I have these lori grenier (sp) spoons that have hooks so they dont slide into boiling pots Thats what i used and they are long enough but dont feel bad i did the same thing and even knew it was going to happen but still did it anyway! lmao For the future just fish with a spoon have paitence it takes a couple of minutes but not impossible :)

I keep a few of them grommets handy, and tell the fricken other one to suffer until bottling. But have gone in up to my elbow for the phone once; not sanitized & the beer was fine. The phone died a heroic death to save the batch from my stupidity. Cheers:drunk:

Yep, really... The yeast starts propagating and eating, sinking to the bottom and floating to the surface on bubbles of CO2. Your beer doesn't clear until the yeast flocculates when it is done, but even then there is yeast in suspension pretty much forever unless you filter.
