1st double ipa- few questions

going to be making my 1st double ipa and have a few questions... target og is 1.075, making a 5 gallon batch, i will be using wyeast 1056. Is 1 smack pack enough for this or would i need 2? thanks

If u can't make a starter, I would pitch 3 packs, that's 300bil cells, plus or minus depending on viability which is about right for 1.075 according to a yeast pitch calculator

Or 2 packs of rehydrated dry yeast, way cheaper and easier.

I have done a couple beastly brews over 1.08 and never pitched three packs only 1

Youre going to have tremendous lag if you only pitch one pack. I'd do two at the least, three is even better. Or best, just make a starter and be done with it

I agree look into making a starter. I've been doing this now for the last year and have been happy with it. Also, I do over builds and save it so I can keep using the yeast for another brew. But that's a whole other topic.

I've made DIPA's with just one 1056 pack, one pack for a 1L starter and one pack for a 2L starter and for future double's I'll go with a 2L starter.

I also think with that many more yeasties around there's it's a much better party in the carboy and that comes through in the taste of your beer.

Agreed, best time and money investment I have made! Improved beer quality right off the bat. If your going to by 3 smack packs, your probably 1/4 of your way money wise into buying the necessary equipment to make starters. Bite the bullet, if you plan on continuing brewing and shooting for high OG beers, its worth every bit of time and really not a huge amount of $$.
