Just got done moving from my primary to my carboy and really am not sure what my primary is supposed to look like. This was using the Brewer's Best Holiday Ale Kit. There is a film surrounding the top of the primary and with a slight cake covering the lid.

Yes, that's normal, actually a sign of a strong ferment!

*edit: The ring from the krausen, and is just dried proteins, hop bits and other solids.

Looks normal to me. That film on top is the dried up krausen. Krausen is yeast and wort proteins that bubble up in a foamy layer on top while the beer is fermenting. After fermentation dies down, the krausen recedes and much of it gets stuck on the sides of the primary fermenter, or, if the krausen gets high enough, on the lid as well.

100% fine, that is just what is left over from high krausen. So relax and have a...wait...have a local craft beer.

Thanks all who responded, feels great inside knowing it wasn't a sign of me messing something up. I had heard about the krausen but in most video's i'd seen there was nothing like mine.
