It's a heavy thing for its size, about 5" square, 300 mA, and says it's "impedence protected". I don't remember where I scrounged it years ago. What's the best way to control the speed for DIY'ing a stir plate?

Or should I save this for another project and buy a little 5V or 12V fan?

I think save it for another project and get yourself a 12v pc fan. Easier to control, safer and I'm personally scared of ac power and water /fluids. The ac fan would be awesome in a kegerator or fermentation chamber where it can blow at full speed
