So my friend and I are doing our first 10 gallon batch and I have a couple questions. What is a common pre boil volume and I want to use safale05 would I use 2 packets? I want to do a yeast starter from a American ale strain I harvested from my last batch but my stir plate isn't working.

My volumes
Pre boil 13 gal
Post boil 11.5 gal
Transfer 10.5 gal
keg 10 gal

Might lose more or less in transfer depending on amount ant type of hops.

Go to mr malty to calculate pitching rate depending on your gravity. Each 11 gram pack of US05 has either 200 or 60 billion cells depending on who you believe. I believe in 200. No starter needed.

I agree with the previous poster, check out Mr malty. Two packs will probably be fine but it depends on the OG. And make sure you rehydrate it.
