I was contemplating buying a larger kettle (7.5 or 10 gal) and was wondering if either of these sizes would work on just a conventional electric coil stove top, or if i absolutely need to go all out and buy a gas burner (which I can't afford right now).

Please let me know.

I can't imagine that a conventional electric stove will boil ten gallons. Maybe there is one, but certainly not one I've encountered recently. Mine struggles with five.

Don't shortcut this one...buy the 10 gallon kettle and gas burner when you get the cash. You will be heating strike water for days.

I do 7.5 gal full boils on mine and it works great. Full rolling boil. Does your stove list a wattage? Mine is probably close to twenty years old. My buddy just got a new one, and he struggles with four gal boils.

My electric stove can do 7.5 gallons as well, but I supplement it with a heatstick to make things go a little faster. Cheaper than propane and a burner and I can also comfortably brew in the winter.

Look into a canning coil for your electric heater. Mine works decent enough to bring 7 gallons to boil. Not as fast as propane/gas, but it allows me to work indoors.
