I have a recipe that says 10 day dry hop. Should I have dry hopped 10 days before bottling? I did it 10 days after boiling. ImageUploadedByHome Brew1399321060.981374.jpg

It's real close to 10 days. Just wondering if I should toss an ounce or 2.

Let the beer reach FG first. Then give it another 3-7 days to clean up & settle out clear or slightly misty. Then dry hop 10 days.

Unless your in a rush, dry hop after or close to FG (12 - 30 days depending on how big the beer is). I typically will dry hop 5-7 days once I am close enough to finishing FG that I know it'll be done by time dry hop period has finished. Did Yoopers house pale ale I was in rush to have done for a party, had in primary 14 days (was pretty close to FG) so dry hopped in keg while carbonating and was ready to drink 3 weeks after brewing it...tasted great too!

It's saying to dry hop for 10 days, not 10 days afters it was brewed. Dry hop once fermentation is complete, or nearly complete since it will continue to ferment while dry hopping.

Ill chalk that up to rookie mistake. Thanks.

theres nothing wrong with having done it 10 days after boiling. fermentation should have been ceased by then, so as long as you gave it a few days with the dry hops, theres not really an issue

It smells lacking. I brewed this with strictly citra hops. Gonna throw an couple more ounces in but have no citra. Anyone ever use Newport hops?

When the bubbling slows or stops isn't a good time to start dry hopping. The beer is still slowly fermenting down to FG. Fermentation must be complete & the beer settled out clear or slightly misty to get all the dry hops can give. Otherwise, the hop oils coat the yeast cells & go to the bottom with them.

Yeah it was done when I dry hopped. Way past that. Thanks.

I dry hopped after racking to secondary. Just wasn't sure about when the 10 days were. Before bottling or after boil. I have that part figured out now.

Of Course adding an extra few ounces of hops won't hurt, but the beers I've dry hopped don't really develop that punch you in the face aroma until they are carbonated. So, don't get too concerned if you don't smell the hop aroma are are expecting before bottling or after 10 days of dry hopping.

I brewed Hop Hammer from Jamil and Palmer's book Brewing Classic Styles, which is about as close to Pliny the Elder as you can get, without having the real thing and it had some ridiculous dry hop additions and while the beer did smell hoppy before bottling it wasn't over the top, but after carbing up in the bottle, you could smell the hops from the bottle 10' away when the cap was pryed off.

Carbing it makes sense. Maybe I'll wait. If it's no bueno I'll just make another one.
