thats a carbon filter... lol did you really use it to filter your beer?

you're supposed to use a regular plain filter without carbon...
 
Yep that's your problem. Carbon filter will take out a lot of things that you want. You want something more along the lines of a sediment filter

Me neither, but to each their own. Sounds like a royal pain to me.

Not a big deal actually. I usually don't, but I've done it occasionally.

Sometimes people care about how their beer looks, and sometimes when you're pouring for a large group some of those folks will be sensitive to yeast in suspension and you don't want any of your guests getting yeast runs as a result.

If you have enough time to let it crash out/bulk age at low temps, you won't have to do it, but if you've got an event and need to speed things up, that's what a filter is for.

Lots and lots of microbreweries do the exact same thing, or centrifuge, so it's not like some no-no of craft beer. Just a preference thing. I see both sides of it personally.
 
Its so you can remove the yeast right away and have clear brew instead of cold crashing and racking . which can take weeks to months.

I've never brewed a beer that wasn't read-through clear by the time it was nicely carbed up, and that goes back to my bottling days.

I do 4 days cold-crash, then keg and put on gas in my conditioning fridge.
Two weeks later I'm pouring perfectly carbed clear beer.

So my process would shed three days I guess, at the price of the pita that filtering must be...

[edit] Don't want to leave the impression that I think filtering is a bad idea, just that I don't see enough of a benefit given my pipeline practices to balance the additional effort and risk...

I mainly filter my cider with a .5 micron filter to remove all the yeast since i back sweeten it. Would rather filter the yeast out than kill the yeast with additives.

I rarely filter my beers though. ive done it twice before but only cause i had just filtered some cider and just ran the beer through the same filter after the cider was done.
 
It was a cider and I stopped the filter when I tasted the clear liquid due to the questionable water appearance . lol

Good catch. at least you saved some.

Id go with a .5 micron filter to ensure all the yeast is out. i'm assuming your going to back sweeten it right?

PS I use a Pentek slim filter holder, which takes the 9.75" filters ( also not too happy with it, I don't think it channels the liquids correctly, so if you have success with another im all ears!

My beer is gone in "weeks to months" so I haven't had that experience.

It's true that you can get a .5 micron filter to filter out yeast but I haven't needed to. I don't filter or use gelatin or anything like that.

Here's a pale ale that is about 4 weeks old (keg nearly empty):

I did a search in my inbox to find the email receipt but didn't find it. I bought mine from some water equipment supply online site. They were not re-useable and were like $4 or $5 per filter. Ill check to see what brand it is when i get home. currently at work right now.

went to Morebeer and got some advice to re-use my water filer housing for beer. For about $12 got a 5 micron filter, hoses, ball lock fittings and clamps. Just put a Classic American Cream Ale(CACA) through it to remove floaties. I racked from the Primary Fermentor to the keg, and knew I picked up some floats. Relatives coming for visit, probably wouldn't appreciate the floats...despite my offering of "beer education"
