Hi all. I am about to get into trying 1 gallon all grain batches. I have been doing 5 gallon batches for a few years now and have that process down. I know I need to scale everything down by 5. No problem there. Question 1. I would like to try a no sparge BIAB on my stovetop. I know my boil off target for a 5 gallon batch is usually around 6.50 to 6.75 or so to boil down to 5.25 or so. How would I figure out my total water amount in a no sparge scenario when the grain bill is only 1.75 pounds. Also would I use a whole packet of yeast as I would in a 5 gallon batch?

1) Put a gallon and a half of water in a pot and boil it for an hour. Then measure what's left, that'll give you your boil loss for an hour. There is no hard/fast number for evaporation as it's pot and boil vigor dependent.

2) Take the evap amount, plus the amount of water that will be absorbed by the grain (.75qt/lb), then whatever you want for either a no-sparge or a sparge volume.

Or use this for a ballpark:

If using dry yeast, you only need about 4g (1/3packet). I almost always overpitch to a half packet, it's easier to fold the packet in half and nip a corner.

Have fun!

If you are using the same pot and burner for the 1-gallon batch that you use for the 5-gallon batch, you should boil off about the same amount of liquid in an hour either way. Boil-off is in gal/hr, not % of volume.
