    Leaving in fermentation bucket

I plan to pour the priming sugar water solution in the carboy and then use and auto siphon to mix the beer into it from the primary. Then I will use the auto siphon along with a bottling wand.

    Leaving in fermentation bucket

Thanks. Also, have you ever bottled from a carboy before? I was going to this time if I do not rack it because I fermented in the plastic bucket because my carboy is only 5 gallons. I was thinking if I do not rack it then it would be less time consuming for me to just siphon into the carboy and...

    Leaving in fermentation bucket

So I started this batch of ESB on January 3 and it calls to be left in the primary for 10 days then bottled. However, I am not quite ready to bottle because I do not have my bottles prepared just yet. Should be ready in several days. My question is should I rack it to get the beer out of the...

    Too Cold to ferment

Checked my gravity today. It's at 1.010. Started around 1.042 so it's close to end of fermentation. Had a sample as well from my hydrometer jar. Tastes great. :)

    Too Cold to ferment

    Too Cold to ferment

Yeah our thermostat is upper 50s now. Luckily they are coming to fix in the next few hours. I placed the bucket in view of a nice sunny window for the time being.

    Too Cold to ferment

I was also considering placing the bucket onto a heating vent for a little while once the heat is fixed right. Would that be okay?

    Too Cold to ferment

So with all of this cold here, our heating is lagging quite a bit and its down to the low 60s in our house, so I am pretty sure my ale has stopped fermentation. The side of the bucket is pretty cool. I havent taken a reading, but i doubt theres any point. Anyways, they are coming to fix it...

    Air Lock Bubbles

Really? I even asked the guy at the brew shop and he said just pitch it and it will be more than enough. Hurm....

    Air Lock Bubbles

Here is how it looks right now. I pitched the yeast about 50 hours ago. And it bubbled all yesterday and has called down drastically today. ATTACH]170452[/ATTACH]

    Air Lock Bubbles

I pitched White Labs. I did not do a starter because the kind I got is a pitch as is type.

    Air Lock Bubbles

The water is still definitely being pushed to one side of the air lock, so there is pressure in there, if not enough to cause bubbling. I am afraid to expose it to oxygen this early in the fermentation process so I will probably wait til the latter half of this week to take a reading. (I dont...

    Air Lock Bubbles

On my first batch I was out of town and didn't get to observe how long the air lock showed visible signs of fermentation. For this new batch I am getting to watch and it seemed to only bubble for about 24 hours. From what I have read ales usually ferment 2-6 days so is this normal? Should it...

    Pitching and cold break

by the way, i failed to mention that by letting it cool over night, i mean i poured 3 gallons of cold water in my fermenter, then the hot wort, which i then sealed so it would cool faster.

    Pitching and cold break

I am pretty new at brewing and I have been reading up on the process of it and whatnot. I have done one batch so far and the way i did the yeast was i just let the wort cool over night and i pitched the yeast the following morning. However, i have been reading John Palmer's How To Brew book and...

    Dry Yeast Pitching

Nevermind. I just read how some people just pitch it dry and some rehydrate. I see that the consensus is to rehydrate. Next time i may just get a liquid yeast.

    Dry Yeast Pitching

So i made my first batch last month. I used dry yeast and i pitched it and it fermented just fine. However, I have been reading a brewing book and it talked about rehydrating the dry yeast before pitch. I didn't do this and just poured it in and stirred it in. It definitely fermented and my beer...

    Fermentation Stopped

From the time I pitched the yeast to yesterday was just over 72 hours. Is that really long enough for fermentation to complete? Especially since I didn't notice much activity before we left town early Wednesday morning. My girlfriend heard the air lock gurgle once during the day Tuesday but that...

    Fermentation Stopped

I took a hydrometer reading when i saw it had stopped fermenting. The reading was somewhere between 1.010-1.020 (I started at 1.044-1.045). So it had definitely fermented some while I was away. I shook the bucket to help kick start the yeast as a suggestion and it started back up earlier, though...
