What do you do with your spent grains?

I compost 'em, or feed 'em to pigs at a farm near where I work. I think over the holidays, I'm going to try make pine cone and suet feeders with some. Roll a pine cone in softened suet, and then in birdseed...in this case, spent grain. Sounds like a plan...I have an excuse to brew a small...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I try to brew custom batches for friends and colleagues every so often. My co-workers boyfriend tried to get in on the action. Hard to take his begging for beer seriously when he asked for a beer with "low IPAs...if the IPA number gets too high, it's too bitter". I've seen IBU/IPA confusion...

    Ok, Admit You Do It

This is one of the many reasons to grow hops. The "green screen" on the fence around my yard provides a source of brewing ingredients, and a nice screen for those times when one does not want to track mud into the house just to answer nature's call.

    Homebrew hangovers

Fusels have been mentioned, what about acetaldehyde? Is their any green apple taste/aroma in what you're drinking and then getting the hangover from? A friend of mine gets pretty ill from beer with any noticeable acetaldehyde profile. Just a thought. Personally, if I drink smart, homebrew...

    Straight sugar brew

There used to be three kids who would push my head in the snowbank after school. The "nice" kid in the bunch was the one who told the other guys to only push my head in clean snow, without road gravel or dog-yellowed spots. That's the kind of "nice" a turbo juice brew will be. Having both...

    Straight sugar brew

The last time I seriously thought about fermenting a straight sugar wash/wort/syrup as opposed to obtaining some really cheap wine, I lacked the requisite gov't issued documents to do so...and couldn't find someone with a valid ID willing to pull for me at the offsale... However, giving the...

    Official Broken Hydrometer Count

1022 and 1023 1022: stupid newbie, ten years ago. I put it on a counter, and it rolled off. Hyrdrometers don't bounce. 1023: Three weeks ago - during a normal SG test, the bulb on my hydro split into three. No idea why. My third hydrometer in ten years is happy and healthy and currently...

When did you consider yourself a homebrewer?

When I did my first ground-grain-glass batches last December. I grew and malted my grain, used homegrown hops, and made a stout and a weizen. When those two brews turned out, I felt comfortable saying I'm a homebrewer, not just a guy who makes beer at home.

You know you're a home brewer when?

I got to tour a wastewater treatment lab at U of Manitoba last winter. Basically, a bunch of engineers trying to figure out cleaner ways to break down sewer, capture methane, etc. The lab smelled terrible, no one wanted to touch anything, etc. But the equipment! The whole place was...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Yeah, there's SWMBO, and then Crazy Stalker Girl, SWMBOOSWHITBOYHAHYF. (She Who Must Be Obeyed Or She Will Hide In The Bush Outside Your House And Haunt You Forever). I didn't overhear this, but a co-worker told me over lunch this week "I don't like beers with malt in them. They're too...

Sparkling Fruit Mead - What Competition Category?

Hey, everyone! Winnipeg is having one of it's first pro/am brewing competitions this month. I have a mead my friends and family are encouraging me to enter. It's a 12% dry sparkling mead, with raspberry, blueberry, saskatoon, red currant, and rhubarb. The way I read the BJCP...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I don't know about at a BMC brewery, but I do remember visiting Busch Gardens in Florida as a 10 y.o. kid with my family. There was definitely a tasting area, and Dad def. slipped me a few tastes from his taster cup. I remember asking on the way back to the hotel why the beer at home tasted...

    Pine in fermenter!

I a spruce tip APA once, and sometimes make spruce tip tea in the spring. Spruce isn't pine, but if you do try...only add a little. Take the amount you think you should add, and add half that. My opinion (or, o-pine-nion), but if pine is like spruce - a little goes a LOOONG way. In the APA...
