    Substitute for Honey Malt

Never wound up trying an aromatic substitute for honey malt...I think that the aromatic would be more biscuit flavored vs. honey. But I've modified my Honey Wheat recipe and make it annually since it's always a crowd pleaser. steep for 30 minutes: 4 oz carapils 8 oz honey malt Bring to...

    Sweetening options

One way to "add" sweetness is to "subtract" bitterness. So you can lower the amount of hops to alter the balance between the bitter and sweet. You could try decreasing your bittering hops addition (although this would require you to brew another batch). Another option is to kill your yeast...

    Is secondary Yeast Settlement "useable"

For most homebrewers use, yeast from secondary works fine. As the yeast grows and multiplies, you can find mutation; but I've used yeast cakes from secondary with good results and no problems. I doubt that you'd see commercial brewers doing this, because they demand strict control and...

    Schwarzbier recipe?

Anyone have a tasty schwarzbier recipe? I'm looking for something to do with a Bavarian lager yeast. Thanks. Marc.

    Substitute for Honey Malt

Okay, I called around and found a brewstore about an hour away that carried honey malt. After nibbling on some honey malt and comparing it to aromatic, it's really not the same. At any rate, I'm brewing up a batch with: 8 oz honey malt 4 oz carapils 4 lbs wheat DME 3/4 oz Styrian...

    Substitute for Honey Malt

I went to the LHBS this afternoon and they were out of honey malt:( . I was planning on brewing up a batch of honey wheat this evening and wasn't sure if I should just be patient or try to adapt. I have some aromatic and some biscuit malt. Worth a try to substitute? I was only going to use...

    Honey Wheat?

I've seen a lot of people post good things about Dude's "B's Honey Wheat." I was tossing around brewing up something similar for all my light beer buddies. Along those lines, what yeast have you all used? I'm not a huge fan of the dominant banana:ban:/clove/phenolic notes of a characteristic...

    toasting malt

Ditto as above for toasting malts (wet/dry, temps, etc.); but I've always heard that you should toast whole grains and then crush/mill after toasting. I'm not quite sure why...perhaps you are primarily toasting the hull to get the flavor and avoid a lot of conversion/carmelization of the sugars...

    American Honey Wheat?

Sounds a lot like Dude's "B's Honey Wheat." Different hops profile, and slightly more grain but a little less honey, so the OG will probably be similar. Check out this post about honey/honey malt. Marc.

    Single Hop Brews v2.0

:off: but not exactly... Does anyone know of several commonly available commercial brews that represent good examples of a particular hops? There are some hops that I've never used and am not quite sure what bitterness/flavor/aroma they contribute. Sure I can read descriptions, but sometimes...

    Good second brew?

Brown ale, stout, porter, red, IPA, English mild/bitter, wit bier, Belgian ales, wheat, Hefe Weizen... The sky is the limit; especially since you have easy access to pretty much any ingredient you need using the internet. A better idea, would be for you to go out and try a wide array of...

Cheap version of an IPA? Any ideas?

For a basic IPA recipe I usually go with: 6 - 7 lbs DME 1 lb Crystal (40-60L or so) and then use whatever hops you like: 10-15 HBU at 60 min 1/2 oz at 15 min 1/2 oz at 10 min 1/2 oz at 5 min 1/2 oz at flameout +/- Dry hop in secondary American Ale yeast of your choice As far as...

    Critique my maibock

As much as I like to keep true to a particular style, I've found that using the "right" ingredients doesn't always lead to the "right" taste. I'm brewing up a bock this afternoon and was looking for suggestions. (Read thread here). From what I understood, most modern bocks will have a...
