    Competiion question

It depends on the competition. Many store entries cold, but some do not. You can always contact the competition organizer and ask.

    NHC 2015 - Registration Open

I haven't seen any drafts after the last review round I was apart of, but from the comments and questions I've seen, I doubt they are changing that much. If anything, you might see a few beers move to different categories than in the draft or some names change. Overall, many of the new styles...

    NHC 2015 - Registration Open

Scottish/Irish is a tough category since you have very strong and complex Wee Heavy ales competing against sessionable shilling beers. It would almost be like having English Barleywines compete against English Bitters. So, I'm glad that the Wee Heavy style is getting moved to complete with other...

    NHC 2015 - Registration Open

As far as I know, there is mainly one person at the AHA that handles all the verification, so I imagine she goes in order that the regions submit their results. I bet NY and Sac will be posted by the end of this week.

I think the speed of verification correlates to how much caffeine Janis has consumed... :rockin:

Anyone in AZ put a fermenting chamber in their garage?

Lots of Phoenix area home brewers have fridges or freezers in their garages. You do have to watch for excessive condensation and some ice build up during summer if you are using it as a keezer, but my freezers have been going strong for a few years. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Continuing off flavors!

Try to find a qualified judge or experienced brewer in your area (club meeting?) to try it and held ID any off flavors. You describe earthy, metallic and plastic, so it's hard to know what's going on with it. What kind or water are you using? Tap? RO? Any water treatments? I've used US-05 a...

    Phoenix Brew Pubs

Four Peaks also opened up a tasting room in the newer production facility in Tempe a couple years ago. No kitchen but daily food trucks. It's a bit more low key with easier parking.

    Phoenix Brew Pubs

It really depends on how far you can drive. Fate in Scottsdale and Arizona Wilderness in Gilbert are two of the newer brewers and both are getting rave reviews. Downtown there is Phoenix Ale Brewery, which is OK. In Tempe, there is the state's largest brewery, Four Peaks. In Chandler, San Tan is...

The 2014 NHC First Round - Results/Speculation Thread

I judged in Denver this weekend. It was extremely well run. I stayed for the award announcements (I don't remember any names, sorry) and they already had the scoresheets packed and ready to go for locals to pick up who were there volunteering. I would guess they will get them mailed soon. The...

The 2014 NHC First Round - Results/Speculation Thread

Denver, St. Paul and Chicago all judge this upcoming weekend. I'll be judging in Denver; it was ran well there last year.

New York City 2014 NHC First Round

Judging locations unfortunately aren't always ideal, especially larger comps with so many bottles to handle. Sometimes they are in breweries with smells from active fermentations. I've been in outside tents at festivals with smells from grass/trees/cars/fry bread stand/etc. and lots of noise...

    BJCP Category: Imperial Hazelnut Porter

If the hazelnut is more than a small background flavor, it should go in 21A Spice/Herb/Vegetable. If you look at the commercial examples, Rouge Hazelnut Brown Nectar is listed: http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style21.php If you can barely small/taste the hazelnut and its just a small...

Couple of dry hopping in the cold keg questions.

Be careful dry hopping with saaz. It tends to get very grassy, very quickly. I once tried to dry hop a pils, and it was nearly undrinkable after a few days. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    First Home brew competition

I think this one is pretty unique to Stone. It is not a traditional BJCP/AHA sanctioned competition in that attendees are judging for their favorite beer versus certified beer judges judging the beer against the style guidelines. It's a popularity contest versus a blind judging.

    BJCP Styles Question

Enter what it tastes/smells like versus what the recipe was meant to make. The judges won't know your ingredients. If it smells/tastes like an Amber, enter it in amber. If it smells/tastes like an ESB, enter it as ESB. :)

    Competition Question for Judges

I've used the comp software before and sometimes it can be hard to display results properly if a style category was judged by multiple tables of judges. So with 22 stouts, I bet they broke it out into 3 tables/flights and the software wants to award medals for each flight instead of a whole...

Do pro brewers enter the NHC comps?

Yes it is only for homebrewers. It is the national HOMEBREW competition. The pros have GABF. From the rules: c) Your homebrew cannot have been brewed on equipment used to brew beverages for any commercial purpose, whether for commercial research, production or any other purpose, including...

    Skunky Pilsners?

Diacetyl would be a butter like taste in a pils. Low levels of diacetyl are ok in a bohemian/Czech pils. Skunkiness is a reaction between light and hop compounds that is very common in import beers, particularly in green bottles that offer little protection against light. Skunkiness is not...
