    Setting a Monster Mill Correctly

I collected 6 gallons of wort and boiled it for 60 minutes, i had a small amount of foam boil over, maybe a cup total. After I chilled it I added the wort to my primary fermenter and then added my 1L yeast starter and took my OG reading, that is how I take all my readings so I could compare to...

    Setting a Monster Mill Correctly

Here is my update: I finally got a chance to brew, things got busy the last few days and I finally chiseled away 4 hours to brew. I started out setting my mill using my costco card and crushed about a pound of grains. It looked like it was too fine, seemed to be very fine pieces in the...

    Setting a Monster Mill Correctly

Wow, thanks for all the help. There is no doubt that my mill is set incorrectly, I bet I could drop 2 credit cards between the rollers and they wouldn't even touch. I'm going to get a yeast starter up and running and brew sometime by the weekend to see how much these mill adjustments help my...

    Setting a Monster Mill Correctly

All: I have been getting consistently low efficiency since I began brewing all grain. I have a 10 gallon cooler setup and I fly sparge. I have tried every trick I have been recommended from lengthening my sparge time to batch sparging and haven't seen any significant changes. Normally I...

    Help Adding Peaches to Heffeweizen

All: I have a 5 gallon batch of Heffeweizen I just brewed and it is in primary right now. I also have 5 lbs. of peaches in the freezer that I wanted to add to the beer to make a peach flavored Heffeweizen for my wife. My plan of attack was to thaw out the peaches and dump them in a big...

Help switching to 10 gallon batches

Currently I have a 10 gallon pot and 10 gallon cooler rig.I want to brew 10 gallon batches so I can split them up in 2 5 gallon batches to share with a friend. Besides a 20 gallon pot, what else do i need to have or think about when I make the jump? Do I need 2 packs of yeast or can I make a 2...

    Help! No signs of fermentation!

Brewed a porter with wyeast London ale on Friday. The packet never swelled as much as in the past but I pitched it anyway. I cracked the lid on the bucket and I have no foam and no signs of fermentation so I assume that yeast was a dud. I do have another pack for another beer. I'm thinking...

    Hop Trellis/Rhizome spacing

I want to start a couple varieties of hops, cascade and williamette, on the eve of my house. They will have about 40' vertical to grow. I have a friend who can supply me with cascades and will order the williamette. Right now I am planning on an 8' wide spot between 2 windows with 6 strings...

    Yeast Starter Foam Expansion

Just brewed an oatmeal stout and made my first yeast starter for it. Foam has taken over. I have foam and beer leaking out around the bucket lid and the airlock. I'm afraid I won't have any beer left. What can I do to remedy this problem so I don't lose beer?

It looks like Citra hops are out so I'm leaning towards Chinook to replace them. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Fred

American Pale Ale Recipie Feedback Please

I'm new to all-grain brewing and I am just venturing into creating my own recipies. I do not like bitter beers, I prefer stouts and wheats that are more malty than bitter but I am learning to enjoy the different aromas and flavors of hops in lighter beers. Lately, however, I have had a few...

    Grain Mill and Scale

I am just starting all-grain brewing. What should I buy for a grain mill and a scale? We don't have any local homebrew stores so I will need to buy grains in bulk and then weigh and crush them when I am ready to brew. Thanks, Fred

    wood for mash paddle

I do a lot of woodworking and have lots of scraps lying around the shop. I used this piece of quartersawn white oak to make my mash paddle last night. I am brewing my first all grain beer tomorrow. I'll try to attach a pic of the paddle to this post. Thanks, Fred
