Sampled first beer finally - Have questions

I've had the large bubbles occur for me as well and while I haven't been able to specifically attribute it to one thing or ther other, I have had a few ideas on what the culprit could be. For example, how were the bottles stored while allowing them to carbonate, were they stored in a bright room...

Vodka in airlock went below fill line so I topped it off and

Agreed, you shouldn't worry, chances are there was positive pressure inside the entire time.

Spend my money, pick apart my strategy

I agree with the swamp cooler idea. If you check the water temp often enough, you should be able to easily keep the beer in prime fermentation temps. It's a cheap and effective solution to a very important stage in the process. I even keep mine beside my bed so it can bubble me to sleep at...

    Mash Tun Cooler Conversion Question

Well I went ahead and ordered a bulkhead and 3 piece 1/2" ball valve from Ontario Beer Kegs, and everything went together very easily. I just kept the gasket that came with the cooler and used that in the bulkhead contruction along with the other silicone o-rings/ss washers. I filled it up...

Is Palmer's Cincinnati Pale Ale Good?

This was my first brew as well. I turned out OK/drinkable despite my several errors, which included pushing the bung into the fermenter and fishing it out with a coat hanger AND a blow out. I aged a 6 pack for over a year and it actually tasted really good. Just goes to show that time heals...

    Mash Tun Cooler Conversion Question

At first I used a tape measure, then I confirmed it by placing a 1" drill bit in the hole.

    Mash Tun Cooler Conversion Question

Just picked up a 5G round cooler from home depot to convert to a mash tun. I was just going to pick up a standard conversion kit from bargainfittings, but it mentions that the hole can't be bigger than 7/8", so I took the spigot out and measure the hole and it's 1". Is there some sort of work...

    Bottling Set up

Heh heh, I know, I know..... green bottles, but I take precautions, they get fully covered by towels and stored between solid objects on three sides. No light in the beer fridge either, so they should be pretty safe. @Copperpots yeah thats exactly what i did, just put a piece of hose on the...

    Bottling Set up

After about 25 gallons brewed, I think I finally have a comfortable bottling set up. I have a fairly small kitchen, maybe 7'x15', but the set up works pretty well and very little beer is wasted. First I siphon the brew into my DIY bottling bucket, complete with dip tube (a la Revvy), usually...

    Apfelwein

I just bottled a batch of edworts apfelwein that i fermented with champagne yeast. I hit the target SG/FG according to the recipe (1.066/0.998) and bottled into regular beer bottles. I added 3.6 oz of priming sugar. I shouldn't worry about bottle bombs since i hit the target FG correct? I...

Munich Helles Dead Guy Clone (Extract & AG- see note)

Happily drinking my way through the first batch of this. Brewed the extract version and it has turned out great. Been a little of two months since brewing it. Very malty and has a nice sweetness to it. A+

My beers all taste the same.

Fermentation temps are pretty important. I noticed a large improvement in the taste of my beer once i started controlling the temps.

"The IKEA Effect", or yet another reason why I love my homebrew

My first two batches had off flavours, but I drank them anyways because *I* made it. Not sure I would have drank it otherwise. Though my 3 batch tastes good, so maybe it'll be a beer i let others try!
