High efficiency problem with a kit beer

Sure enough, brewed today and ended up with a 72% efficiency. Had the OG come in right where it needed to be. I guess the crush is the reason I have higher efficiency.

High efficiency problem with a kit beer

I figure with the 10% hit i should come in right on the high end of their gravity and probably be ok. We'll see on Monday.

High efficiency problem with a kit beer

It didn't even occur to me that they account for lower efficiency in the kits until I received the order. I'll try increasing the water as planned and hope for the best. Who knows, maybe I'll get enough extra to make a gallon with some other hops I have laying around. Thanks!

High efficiency problem with a kit beer

I have been brewing for awhile and have my AG system dialed in to stay in the high 80's for efficiency most of the time. I just got an Oktoberfest Lager AG kit that has all the grain mixed and crushed. When I punched the recipe into my Beersmith I'm going to end up around 1.076 for my O.G. but...

    Monster Mill 2 Crush?

I use an old rectangular cooler with a CPVC manifold that is slotted on the bottom. I would get between 70-80% efficiency depending on who crushed my grains. Last summer I bought a Barley Crusher from another brewer and he had the gap set at .025". I've never had any trouble sparging on the...

    Yeast Harvesting: A Novel Approach?

I've made a few starters using yeast I've harvested and every single one has been really aggressive. I used to be able to make a 2L starter in my 2L flask but all of the starters I've made with the harvested yeast have blown my foil lid off and made a nice little mess on the counter. I'm...

    Wort for starters

Good idea, then the wort would last almost indefinitely. What do you use to store it in?

    Wort for starters

I took the wort before I started my boil and added any hops to it.

    Wort for starters

I am, that's why I didn't go too crazy and collect several gallons. I was hoping for around two gallons which should make around four 2L starters, with my current brewing plans they shouldn't last too long. I figured if it worked well every few weeks I would just plan a mash that I could get...

    Wort for starters

I know it's not saving much, but I figured I was brewing anyways so why not. Also I really don't messing with DME so it made making the starter a lot cleaner.

    Wort for starters

A few weeks ago I was making a starter for an upcoming brew and I began to think, wouldn't it be cheaper to make starters with wort from grain than from DME? Just for grins I built a SMaSH recipe to use up some cascade that's been sitting in the freezer, but instead of a 5.5 gallon batch I put...

    Bayou Classic SQ14 ??

I haven't, I still use my rectangular igloo cooler I built when I went AG. It works great and I always get 85% or better efficiency so I've never been able to justify to myself upgrading my mash tun. Plus I can already see the look in SWMBO's eye if I told her I was going to spend more money...

    Bayou Classic SQ14 ??

I use the SQ14 burner mounted on my own rig for 10 gallon batches and it works great, and it is a lot quieter than the brinkman burner I have up top for my HLT.

    Funky taste.....

That's what I figured, I've got it carbing in the keg now, but I don't hold out much hope for it. School of hard knocks is in session :(

    Funky taste.....

A few weeks ago I set out to brew another batch of Edworts Bee Cave Kolsch, since the first 10 gallons I made disappeared so quickly. Ordered my stuff from Midwest but couldn't find the option to send an ice pack with my yeast. When it arrived the yeast was super warm. I made a starter to see...

    Pin lock liquid disconnect leak

My LHBS only had the whole disconnect, said thy couldn't get individual parts. Now that I know you have them I'll make sire I swing by your shop next time I'm in the area, maybe get some more pin locks too!

    Pin lock liquid disconnect leak

I looked for an o-ring but couldn't find one thin enough, it's more of a gasket than an o-ring really. However, when I went to my LHBS to get supplies for Ed's Bee Cave Kölsch (which was awesome btw) they had a broken disconnect laying around and gave me all the parts from it, which included...
