First BIAB-just a few questions please?

I have only brewed with the partial mash method. I have about 25 batches under my belt and have honed my technique down pretty well. I mash with three gallons in an igloo water cooler at 156 deg. I mash with my grains in a muslin bag. Once I am done with that, I transfer back into the boil...

    Possible stuck Fermenter

I may have fermented a kolsch at too low a temp. I had it at 52 deg. and the air locked bubbled for about three days and now nothing. I have a great krausen so I know it fermented some. I also have a big yeast cake at the bottom of the carboy. I think I've read where it's ok to stir up...

    Aging in a keg.....

Thanks for the advice. Those ideas were exactly what I was thinking, but it's always nice to get some validation too.

    Aging in a keg.....

Great advice!! Would you go ahead and rack directly to the keg from the primary, put 5 or 6 lbs of pressure on it, and then lager it? How many days would you allow for full carbonation if you were attempting to do it at lagering temps? Does carbonating at lagering temps make a...

    Aging in a keg.....

I got a late start on a beer that I need to take on a lake trip in late April. I boiled up a kolsch on 3/17. I will definitely let it ferment for a minimum of 14 days. My question is this. Is it unusual to keg right out of the fermenter, let it carbonate for a week under pressure, and...

    Starters

    Thanks!!

    Starters

I had planned on brewing on 3/09 and made a starter for my beer on 3/07. I ended up not brewing that day and the starter has been sitting in my cabinet where I store all of my gear. There is a very nice cake at the bottom of the container I use for my starters. Is this still good yeast to...

    Overheated my wort when recirculating

Please let us know how this turned out. I did a beer on National Brew Day last May. My brew club was hosting a brew day at the LHBS. I had an emergency come up and had to leave suddenly just as I finished boiling my wort. The only thing I could think of to do, besides pouring out the wort...

    Boiling Techniques

Ok...I just got done force carbing this beer and it turned out fantastic. The slight change I made in the hopping schedule made a big difference and the beer is spot on. Thanks for all of the advice.

    Boiling Techniques

That is precisely what I was thinking also. Carbonation makes a difference for sure. I am kegging and force carbonating on Saturday. Hopefully, my issues with the taste and mouth feel is just me being picky. I am making the exact same beer from the exact same recipe on Sunday. However...

    Boiling Techniques

Thanks for the response...those are all great questions. My recipe called for 4lbs of Light Extract. 2lbs of two row pilsner 4oz of vienna malt 4oz of German Light Crystal 4oz of German Wheat. Target OG was 1.046 and I got 1.045. The FG was scheduled to be 1.013 estimated and I...

    Boiling Techniques

Here's a question. I am a partial mash brewer with about 15 batches under my belt. In the past, I've always mashed my grains in three gallons of water and then boiled and followed my hop schedule. I add the remaining 2-3 gallons to my wort just prior to pitching my yeast. This allows me to...

    Kolsch fermentation

That is excellent advice. I don't know why, but I felt like if I aged/lagered it in a keg, it would take on some flavors I didn't like. I will probably start lagering at 34 deg. this week and then rack to a keg with a couple of weeks left and finish the aging. I am very interested in the...

    Kolsch fermentation

I boiled this beer on 2/10. My OG was 1.050 as was the target OG according to the brewer that posted it on Hopville. He also happens to own my LHBS. The FG on mine as of today is 1.014. The estimated FG from the original brewer is 1.013, but his FG ended up at 1.001. I had a really good...

    Starter for a Kolsch

I wrote something and posted it only to decide I didn't want to post it. I wasn't able to figure out how to delete the post all together so I just deleted the original post and replaced it with this.

    CO2 Tanks - oops

I didn't check my keg seals the first time and lost all of my CO2 when trying to carbonate. I left the keg and the CO2 tank in the freezer for three days to allow for carbonation. Well...I was supposed to take this beer to a party the night I discovered it was flatter than a pancake. I ran to...

    Lager not fermenting

Definitely go with a starter. You'll be glad you did. Nothing bad will happen to you beer in the fermenter while you wait for the starter to mature.

    Kolsch fermentation

It was the White Labs yeast. I went on their web site and that's what they recommended. I checked the fermentor and it's bubbling away so I guess it's all good.. Thanks for the help!!

    Starter for a Kolsch

Update I have vigorous fermentation in the bucket. I pitched the entire starter, without decanting, and it's bubbling away as we speak. Thanks to everyone for the good advice. Oh....the OG on this beer is .050. I think it's gonna be a biggun!!
